The Federal Company has received advice that the New Zealand Shipping Company's motor-ship Opawa, which left Liverpool on November 28th with West Coast cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Timaru, is now proceeding to New Zealand via Dakar and the Cape of Good Hope instead of via the Panama Canal. The Opawa is now due at Auckland on January stli. COALING AT JAMAICA. Arrangements have been made - for the Bteamers of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company in the regular service between this country and New Zealand, through the Panama Canal, to call at Jamaica, says "The Times." The Tainui, of about 11,000 tons gross, called there on her homeward voyage from New Zealand, and announcement is made that she will do so on the voyage from Southampton on December 4th, in the course of which she will be due at Jamaica on December 18th. The liner will carry passengers in the cabin and third-class accommodation. This gain of additional sailings to and from the West Indies is attributable to recent movements in foreign exchange. Hitherto the steamships in the service have usually coaled at Cristobal at the Atlantic end of the Panama Canal. Now, owing to the change in the relationshin between sterling and dollars, it is found cheaper for the. vessels to be coaled at Execution Dock, Port Royal, Jamaica, and one result of the change will be that cargoes of British coal will need to he transported to the island. By these developments Jamaica will gain the advantage of additional communication .by large British liners; passengers to and from New Zealand and this country will have the benefit of another very interesting port of' call on the voyage; and work will he provided for British miners in this country and for the seamen in the ships which carry the coal to the bunkering station.
