Mr C. E. Jones, a local radio enthusiast, first conceived' .the idea of installing a loud-speaker on the balcony of the Progross Build-' ings. As that was not in accordance with the by-laws, a blackboard was suggested by Mr A. Uren, but this idea also fell through. A.number of people expressed disappointment, ahd /offered to assist i with the erection of a display board. This was Hurriedly, made from packing-cases aAd the news that the results of the'election would be shown * soon spread round' the district. Shortly after seven o'clock the crowd started to gather and by about nine .there were nearly 400 watching the board. There was cheering.and booing as the different returns were .posted up. After the returns of the City electorates were completed the. crow.d started to dwindle, but,it after midnight before the last ones left. Besides Messrs Uren jhvd Jones, 'Miss Woods and Messrs Woods, A, Hunt, \V, - Sutherland, H. "Eagleton and A. E.' Purse, assisted. . ■ Kitchen .Evening. .
Mr and Mrs A. Blair, "Blair .Athol," St. John street, were the. host: and, hostess at a kitchen evening" given to Miss Jean Sneddon, who is to be married shortly. A most enjoyable time was spent in .games, competitions, dapSr. ing and community singing. given by Mesdames A. ?eter«J E. Barnard, H. B. Smith, .B.' Krnse, P. Munn. • Miss A. Pring gave a Highland fling and Mrs H. B. Smith a very amusing impersonation of '' Granny.'' Competitions were won by Miss G. Strothera and Mr P. Munn. The toast of the guest of the evening was. drunk -with busical honours. Mr A. E, Mather, on behalf of Miss Sneddon, returned thanks. ■ The party concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne, and cheers 1 for' Mr and Mrs A. Blair. ' 1 'Amongst those . present were "Mesdames A. " An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr -and Mrs Hudson, ■North road, when the St. Paul's Junior Girls' Bible Class and friends met to present a parting gift to Miss..Agnes Brown, before her departure on. a: holiday trip. The presentation of a writ-ing-case was made by Miss Jean Sanderson, who wished her a pleasant "holiday. _ Among those present were Mr and' Mrs Hudson, Mr and. Mrs E. TV.
