GALE IN ENGLISH CHANNEL.
STEAMER DISABLED. (BBITISH omClAt, WIRXLKSS.) {Received December 4th, 5.5 p.m.). RUGBY, December % The steamer Versailles, • while engaged on the cross-Channel service, encountered heavy seas this morning vehen about twelve miles out from Newhaven harbour. The wind rose to gale force and in the buffeting the steamer's rudder was damaged. The Versailles has had to- anchor off Seaford Head until the 1 wind moderates. The tug which was sent-'to the steamer'# assisthad to fight through a fifty miles all hour gale and one huge, wave broke over the deck, severely injuring one of the crew.
