CHRISTMAS CHEER.

ROTARY CLUB RECEIVES' FIRST GIFT. The first public gift to the annual effort of the people ot Christchurch to provide Christmas cheer for poor homes has been received by the 'Christchurch Kotary Cltib, which undertakes the handling of the appeal and the packing and distribution of parcels. Messrs Aulsebrook and Co., Ltd., have repeated their last year's' donation of 300 Christmas puddings. Every week in Christchurch there are 1250 registered unemployed for whom no relief work is provided, sp that the need to be supplied by this year's public generosity will be greater than ever before. Last Christmas hampers were sent to 975 families, and every child in the Christchurch orphanages was given a Christmas card and a new shilling. This time it hoped to send hampers to at least iOOO families. To succeed, the street collection on Friday, December 18th, must be well staffed with helpers. Any person willing to assist is cordially invited to communicate with Mr E. H. S. Hamilton (telephone 34-634), who is chairman of the Appeal Committee, or with the secretary (telephono 36-253). Lady helpers will be made especially welcome. Preliniinary gifts of money or kind may also bo made, and will be gratefully acknowledged. On Sunday, December 20th, the usual band concert will be given in the Christchurch Public Hospital grounds, when the Royal Christchurch Musical Society will assist with the programme.
