The total number was- 563;' There "was a good attendance of residents, both in the afternoon, when the ofticia! opening took place, and in tho evening. : ; Speaking at the opening, .the Ilev. .J. C. Young, president of the show, said that the Itoral entries had nuturully fallen as a result of the recent hailstorm, but the cookery had more than doubled, and, taking everything into consideration, tho committee was pruned with tlie results. lie introduced to the' audience Mr O. W, J?. Anderson, chairman of the Canterbury 'Jlorticullur«l Society, %vho was one of tho judges, and announced that Mr .If; h. barton, {secretary of the Society, was unavoidably absent, but his duties would, be fulfilled by Mr James Young. Described by the judge as one of tho features of the show, the entry of Mrs J. Boag for the medal given by Messrs liyder and Son, of St. Albans, England, was a centre of attraction. The conditions were that the exhibits should be confined to a space of six feet by four feet, and should bo judged for beauty of effect. Moro than, 12 varieties of flowers and shrubs were included.
