ASHBURTON. UNEMPLOYMENT COM MITTEE. The executive of the Ashburton Unemployment Committee met yesterday when the Deputy-Mayor (Mr It. Kerrj presided. Applications from tho Mt. Sorncra Domain Board for three men, and from the Springburu School Committee for four men for one moutli, were granted. It was reported that tho number of men requiring relief under the No. 5 Scheme for the ensuing week was 431 and the amount required was £.BOO i)s. The allocation amounted to £532 .178. It was decided to give tho two-day men one day's work, the three-day men two days, and the four-day men threo days. It was stated that '23 men in the Springburn district and four iu -the Mayfield district were available for work next week. Ten applications under the No. <IA. Scheme wore received and granted. Four applications requiring investigation by the committee were received and threo were approved. Music Examinations. Police Court. Two cases of drunkenness were heard before Mr G. W. Andrews, J.P., at the Police Court yesterday, bofh defendants excusing themselves for ihe lapse on account of the elections. George Humphries was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment and ordered to pay costs. A first offenfler, aged 67 years, who said he was an inmate of Tnarangi Old Men's Home, was fined ,5s with costs, and given a week iti which to pay. East School Picnic.
