CHINESE EXPLANATION. (SKOTSP fEKSS ASSOCIATION—ST EUCCTEIO IELEGIWPH—COrTJIIGHT.) SHANGHAI October 30. Details are available of the Chinese Note replying to the British Government's demand for a further enquiry into the mysterious disappearance in June of the youth John Thorburn, aged 19, during a walking tour. The Note admits Thornburn's cap* ture and subsequent brutal killing, but the investigators have been unable t<> locate the body which is believed to have been burnt when the_ soldiers bocame alarmed by the British community's agitation. The Nanking is reported to have informed the British Government that the guilty parties have been punished. Colonel Wang, who was commanding the regiment responsible, _ha:> been stripped of his rank and imprisoned.
