RAILWAY RETURNS.

FIGURES FOR THE MONTH. A drop of £12,424 in railway revenue in tlio Christchurch district, which includes the West Coast and as far south in Canterbury as Tinwald, is recorded in the general traffic returns for the four-weekly period ended October 24th, compared with the same period last year. There is no special reason for the decrease, railway officials stating that it is due to the economic difficulties under which all businesses have been labouring. . Taking each week, commencing with that ending October 3rd, an all-round drop is shown also in the number of passengers travelling and the same applies to timber and general goods. The detailed figures for the period are as follows: — 1831.

The West Coast. The total tonnage hauled from the West Coast to Canterbury during October was 33,239 tons, compared with 41,382 tons last year. So far this year each month has shown a decrease compared with the corresponding months last year.
