KARERE MURDER.
POLICE MAKE ARREST. DEATH OF WELL-KNOWN CYCLIST. [THE PBBBS Special Service.] PALMteRSTON N., October 31. Investigations regarding the death of Edwin John Blakeway, a well-known amateur cyclist, whose body was discovered at the side of the Karere road, between five and six miles from Palmerston North, on the morning of Monday, August 24th, have been continued by the police, and to-day an important development took place. Senior-Detec-tive Quirke and Detective Doyle arrested Norman Robert Decke. Blakeway, who was twenty-six years of age,'was employed as a clerk at the Palmerston North railway station, an< . when he was found dead -by the roadside, bullet wounds were discovered 111 an arm and wrist, head and chest, leading to the opinion that -he had been murdered. , Blakeway was well known m Wt lington as a track and road cyclist, and was a very popular young fellow. At the time lie met his death he vwis cvcling back to Palmerston Nortu, after having visitod friends m the country, and^,the position of the cycle and body was read as indicating that he had been shot by some person trcfln the side of the road. Wounds in tiie hand and wrist were taken as indicating that lie had struggled with his assilant. , , ~ Following the discovery of the boay bv a newspaper runner, and the com-, inencement of an intensive police search, a eurious story was told by a mailman, that while he was handling mail at '• wayside box a shot or shots were fired at him. , For weeks following this tragedy there was probably a record concentration of police and detective brains in the district, and public interest ia a mystery with many strange features was intense. Latterly public interest waned but not so that of the police, who, it iB understood, have been working along certain lines calling for very i exacting detailed work.
