Judging by the report o,f a recent visitor to one of the largest shag rookeries on the Great Barrier Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, the birds have apparently no set time for their nesting period. Although some of the young are almost ready to leave the nest, others are only a few days'old. At this particular colony on'the Great Barrier there is the unusual sight of two different species of shags nesting together. The value of a model of the locality concerned in the hearing of claims arising from motor collisions was stressed by Mr Justice Herdman when such a case was proceeding in the Supreme Court at Auckland. Several photographs were supplied by counsel for plaintiff, but his Honour remarked at one stage that photographs were not always satisfactory. "In a recent case a model was displayed arid material positions were made quite clear," his Honour said. The Timnru police made diligent enquiries into the oomplaiut by a serviee-?a'r driver, Mr TV. K. Henderson, that he had been struck by a .22 calibre bullet, which penetrated his clothes and lodged in his wallet in his breast pocket, while he was motorcycling to Wnshdyke 011 the evening of September 3rd, and are satisfied tlint the shot was fired by a poacher in quest of game. Inspector Bird stated that a number of men visited the nearbv sanctuary after dark to get a shot iit the-ducks, and probably a strav shot had itj-uck Henderson.
