LOWELL SHERMAN'S SMART . ACTING. His smart, polished acting and excellent .direction Lava given Lowell Sherman, one of tho leading actors of tho Now York stage, a place of his own on tho talking screen. Although almost all his characterisations ore of one typo—the clever, sophisticated young bachelor—ho plays them so superlatively well that every performance seoms more freab and brilliant than tho laiit. His latest picture, "Bachelor Apartment,." was presented at tho Plaza Theatre on Sat- . urday, following hard on the heels of "Tbe Itoyal Bed." Tho new film deals with ft wealthy young bachelor who, having many 'women at his beck and call, wants only one. The first scenes of bis apartment attar , a night's dissipation are exceptionally well shown. His affairs then involve him in serious' danger, almost in death, before he is saved by the very young and very intelligent girl whom ho persuades to become bis secretary. There is a great deal of smart humour in tho picture, and more than one most dramatic scene. As tho director, Lowell Sherman has handled his material excellently, giving the film an intimacy that is quite unusual- on the screon. Hia own acting performance, as Wa.vne Carter, is quite beyond reproach; probably, in fact, tho finest piece of acting to be seen this veek. He is well supported by Mae Murray in a rather unpleasant part, that of a wealthy but unwanted "hanger-on," by ■ Irene Dunne, as tho young and intelligent "secretary, and by Charles Coleman in a .splendid character study as the valet who ■would emulate bis master's habits. Norman Kerry, an important star of former days, makes his reappearance in this film. Tho supporting programme is of the best Plaza standard, including news, comedy, : and cartoon subjects. Louise Fazenda is the star of a most amusing elap-stick com-' ,edy, "Second-hand .Kisses." Benny Rubin • presents very ' cloverly ■ another series of , "Humanettes," taking 1 every part himself in a most difficult courtroom scene. .
