BRIDGE NOTES.
' ♦— — BIDDING. ' - .•(srecUM.Y wkmm* for Tfle PSf.ss.) :. [Hy W illj au Shack lb.] > Any abnormal distribution of cards is likely to make bidding interesting, and it is on such- occasions that the better player scores.v-A' most interesting hand dealt : a night'or two ago was spoiled by poor bidding, yet was ; capable of, making a big slam in, Diamonds or' 5 over inGlubs. Actually, it. was played as 4 Spades, redoubled. .
OK ' The bidding actually was as follows: A. T.. ' B. - • Z. 1 Club 1 Spader 2 Clubs No bid' No bid 2 Spades No bid No bid. 3 Clubs No bid No bid : 3 Spades 4, Clubs 4 Spades • Double No bid No bid Bedouble No bid • •No bid "B" and "Z" were right all-the way, but / ' A's'' first bid of 1 Club gave •«B s ' very .wrong information, as -of course "B*' expected top Clubs. "Y V' first bid of 1 Spade was in order,-but on the second round he ought -to have bid 2 Diamonds to advise "Z" that he' was two suited. Had he done so .he would have made at least a'small slam in Diamonds—probably a big slain, as it was not to be expected that "B" would lead his* Ace of Spades, in view of "YV original bid of. that- • suit.. Now suppose the bidding had_ gone" as above, the rest would have bid:— A. V.. IS. ... ' Z. IClub 1 Spade 2,Clubs- No bid No. bid : 2 Diamonds No bid No bid "3 Clubs, No bid No bid 3 Diamonds 4 Clubs 4 Diamonds, ,No bid,. .No bid. 5 Clubs ' Double No bid o Diamonds Double Kedouble No bid No., bid No bid or 6 Clubs. If G Clubs "Y" would have doubled and "YZwould have .scored 100 for penalty plus 12 for honours—ll2. If "A" had said No bid, "YZ" would have scored 196' below the line, plus 100 I for contract, 200 for overtricks, plus 28 ; for honours—s24 points. - "Now suppose "A" instead of bidding l.Club on the first rimnd had bid 4 Clubs, which was his correct bid, the position would' have been reversed bidding:— ■ A. Y. B. Z. 4'Clubs 4 Spades. Double No bid 5 Clubs Double No bid No bid No-bid. "A " would have made his 5 Clubs and scored: —60 below the line, 50 for contract, less 12 for honours^—:9B. As a rubber depended on this game it would have been worth 98 plus 250—348, instead of which he went down in .4 Spades redoubled—l 44 plus 50 for contact plus. 18- for honours,' plus. 250 rubber—-462. A difference of SlO points.
