RANGIORA. The petition presented to the committee of the Rangiora Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet <sluß, signed by 53 members, asking that the motion forbidding Sunday play on the club's grounds passed at the last annual meeting be rescinded, has now been withdrawn. KAIKOURA. Mr E. F. Hoaly, M.P., has advised the Kaikoura School Committee that the Minister for Education (the Hou. H. Atmore) has approved a further grant for the purpose of replacing the old windows on the northern side of iljt) school with the modern semi-open-air type, making it uniform with the windows in the new structure. Th» weekly session of the Workers' Educational Association f took place at the residence of Mr and' Mrs F. S. H. Warner on Wednesday evening, when there was a good attendance. In St. Paul's Schoolroom on Wednesday evening the members of the Presbyterian Women's Social Club gave a, tea and social evening to trfb teachers and scholars of St. Paul's Sunday School and the Boys' Brigade, Mrs F. Robertson presiding. A treasure hunt was won by Neville Stewart. Songs were given by Margaret Williamson ord June sabiston, recitations by Joyce Cant, Eric Kejneys, and Lester Cant, each item being thoroughly enjoyed. Miss A. E. The quarterly meeting of tho vestry I of St. John's Church, Cheviot, was held in the vicarage on Monday night. The vicar, the. Rev. G. Widdup, presided, and the following members were present: Messrs R. J. Kingsland, W. A. Douglas, J. F. Tonkin, A. Barnes, S. E. Pettengill, A. McGiffert, O. H. Bremner, F. S. Wilson, E. C. Webb, and M. Lawry. The treasurer's report was adopted. Mr E. Edridge tendered his resignation as a member of the vestry, and this was accepted with regret. The Ladies' Guild kindly gave a cupboard for the vestry room, and this gift was accented with thank*. Correspondence was received frqm the Diocesan Office regarding the water supply at the vicarage. Mr F. C, de Lambert's offer to provide a table for the minister's vestry was accepted with thanks. The vicar reported that Mr W. A.' Douglas -had made a gift of a new open fireplace for the vicarage, and Mr Douglas was thariked for his generosity. The vicar reported that three new 1 names had been added to the list of envelope subscribers. Mr P. A, Barnes offered to supplv a new water butt for the church lighting system. Mr and Mrs A. Stocker have generously' offered to replace the hedge along the church Smth. The vicar read tho license issued by the Bishop pf kelson, licensing Comm. D. G. H. Bush as a lay-read-r. It was decided to hold a children's gift service in St. John's Church on Sunday, September 27th, in aid of St. Saviour's Orphanage. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to tho vicar for tho improvements carried out around tho vicarage and grounds, and to Mrs Widdup for her hospitality. WAIKARI. At the meeting of the North Canterbury Miniature Rifle Association, held at Waikari, the president, Mr H". Saunderoock presided. There were also present Messrs W. Boyce and A. Lukey representing Amber ley, Messrs L. Fairburn and G. Pannet for Scargiil, tne Waikari delegates, Messrs J. Earl and K« J>. Anderson, and tho secretary, Mr. J. Boyce. Apologies for absdnce were received from, the Waiau Club. Mention of a championship meeting and a match with tho Kaiapoi Association was inade, and it was decided to hold the matter over till the nest meeting. The offers of the president to give a medal lor the highest individual scorer and of Mr J. Earl of a £1 Is trophy for the C competition were received with thanks. Considering tho late beginning of the Association, the season had been a particularly good one. At the annua} meeting of the Hall Committee, held on September Ist, there w«r© present Mr H. Sanndercoek (chairman), and Messrs G. Arres, W: Mcßae, H. M.,. Anderson, Thompson, Lindsay, A T. Allan, A. D. Allan, Tucker. and F. C. Archer (secretary). The balance-sheet was read, showing an expenditure of £l7B 10s sd, reVenue £149 7s 7d, making a debit balance of £29 2s lOd. Appreciation of the services of Mr Kennard over the last year was expressed. BALCAIRN. There was a record attendance at tho Balcairn Hall Committee's fortnightly aooial, an enjoyable time being epent in competitions and dancing. The winners of the competitions were Mrs J. Fleming, Misses F. Derrett and P. £>ron, and Messrs H. Hurley, D. Drdn, and J. Fitapatrick. Dancing was continued till midnight to music supplied by Mioses A. Fiupatrick and B. Fleming. Mr J". Smith was M.O. Early in the week heavy rain fell, and it set in again on Thursday morning. The ground is very wet and cold. There are • a number of lambs on several farms, and farmers would welcome warm weather and sunshine. Feed is very backward. Dairying in the district is beginning to get active, and oream lomes are starting on the new season's round again. There are some exceptionally good crops of oats to be seen in the district. Several farmers have got large pits Of potatoes on hand yet, they being almost unsaleable, which means a big loss to the growers. ASHLEY BANK. --.The fortnightly social evening arranged by the school committee was held on Tuesday. Unfortunately it, proved a very, rough night and there , was only a small attendance. Competitions were won by Mrs A. C. Jones and Mr Mi Newell. The highest aggregate for. six nights was won l-.v Mite Flossie McFall (109). and Mr M. Newell (184). Tho committee has decided to run only one more of these faactiona for the present season.

OXFORD. The rainfall at Oxford for August was 1.95 inches, falling on seven days. The average for this month is 2.7 inches. The rainfall since the beginning of the year is 21 inches, as against 25 inches for a similar period last year. The committee of the Oxford Agricultural apd Pastoral Association met on Saturday afternoon, the president, Mr A. A. Pantham, presiding. A voto of sympathy was passed to the widow of Mr A. J. T. Wotherspoon. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association wrote offering a special prize, which was accosted with thanks. The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association wrote requesting consideration of the suggestion that steps be taken for the elimination of scrub sires, in order to improve the Hocks and herds of the Dominion. After some discussion it was resolved that tho Association had no recommendation to make. The Canterbury Cob and Pony Society sent forward several items for consideration by the Light Horse Committee, These were favourably received, and appreciation was expressed of tho assistance being given by the Society to make the shows successful. SHEFFIELD. On Friday night the Workers' Educational Association meeting was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, when the Canterbury adult rural scheme lecturer, Mi' G. T. Alley, 8.A., gave a very interesting talk on lluesia and America. The play, "The Melting Pot," was read by Mr Alley and some prints of Turner's pictures were ghown. There was a good attendance of members despite the weather. On Monday evening the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Malvern Lodge, No. 6247, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, when N.G. Bro. G. G. Sutherland presided over a good attendance of officers and members. Sick pay and vouchers were passed for payment. The debating club held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday evening in the Oddfellows' Hall, when a most successful debate was staged against a team from the Sheffield Branch of the Farmers' Union. The subject for debate, "That the Wheat Industry of Now Zealand Should be Protected," was moved by the Farmers' Union tea,m (Messrs D. J. Hawke, leader, A. Clark, and F. A. Bull). The opposing team consisted of Messrs W. E. HicksUssher (loader), G. G. Sutherland, and the Rev. D. K. Boyd. After a keen debate, the negative side gained the decision by 33 points to 30. Tbo Rev. A. S. Moffatt proved a most capable judge. The monthly meeting of the East Malvern Band of Hop© was held in the ball on Wednesday evening when the Rev. J. W. Beyliss presided over a good gathering of people from the surrounding districts. The Rev. V. Jamieson, of Greendale, delivered an inspiring address, and a vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. A good programme was given bv |ocal performers, and Mrs Boyd "and Miss Edwards were the accompanists. The new ferro-concreto manae is almost completed and should be ready for occupation within a few weeks. A meeting of the Waddington School Committee was held in the school on Saturday evening. Mr F. J. Jenkins was in the chair and there was a full attendance of committeemen. It was decided to give a concert in the main Jjpll on September 7th in aid of tho school funds. HALSWELL. The Saturday social evenings that have been hold in the publio hall during the winter months by various committees fetill continue to be well supported. Tho last five nights have beon held under the auspices of St. Agnes School Committee to help the funds of* the teaching staff. The winners of tho competitions wero Mrs E. Lunt, Miss A. McDrury, Mr R. McCarthy, and Mr R. Gardiner. A guessing competition for a ham was won by Mr H. McGougli. After ftupper a dance was hold. The heavy rain throughout the district for the past two days will be helpful to the farmers, the lnnds being very .dry anil hard for ploughing. The Girl Guides of the district, under the charge of their chief, Miss Robinson, journeyed to Rhodes Domain last week, the weather being fine. A most instructive and enjoyable time was spent. A great many improvements have been made in the district under the No. 5 Unemployment Scheme, such as makr ing footpaths and fencing off soma very dangerous corners. Also the hill ; road has been graded and widened. It is now a very goo.d and favourito road for motorists. SPRINGFIELD. \ The Benedicts' Ball, held recently in the Springfield Hall, proved a most successful function, and between 200. and 300 people danced to music supplied by Jackson's Orchestra (Chrlstchurch). The hall dfecorated with greenery and coloured streamers. Visitors to Springfield included Mrs Cameron 1 (Christchurch), Mr and\Mrs Cochrane and Miss Isabel Cochrane (Bealey), Miss Maud Hopkins (Otlra), Misses Constance and Eileea. Gillman (Kirwee), Mr and Mrs S. Smith (Coalgate), and Miss B. Lonie (Dunedin). Mrs Gibson, who has been on a visit to Mrs Rushton, has left for Kaikoura. Miss Moira Gibson is visiting Mrs P. O'Connor (Otira). ! Advice has been received that .Miss Nellie Ferguson has passed her senior division in the recent Trinity College examination of music, also Miss Thelma I Cross, who gained honours. Both are 1 pupils of Miss Amy Howes. At a meeting held recently by Anglican Church members it was decided to hold a social and dance on September 18th to raise funds for extra lighting in the church. ' The annual meeting of the Tennis Club will be held on Monday night. TEMPLETON. The Templeton Scouts held their annual camp at Halkett from August 27th to September Ist. The campers numbered 17 and were in charge of Mr Gilbert Pearce. Despite drizzling rain during the latier day or two, an enjoyable and useful time'was spent. Various tests in cooking and other branches of Scout work were passed. The Scouts' completing the requisite tests for the first-class badge were: Patrol Leader J. Walford and E. Davison. B. DarroC'h gained the secondclass, and S. Woods his Tenderfoot badge. In the camping competition in tent inspection ana camp gadgets tfce Bulldog Patrol, under Patrol Leader M. Wright, again proved to be the best camping patrol. ■ On Sunday afternoon the camp was open to visitors.
