VALUED MEN RETIRE.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. PRESIDENT'S FAREWELL, Bclorc MMfciyg $Uf OWU farewells, the president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr 11. Si E. Turner), at the last meeting of the Council under his chairmanship last night, paid a warm tribute to five members of the Council who are not standing for re* election. "It is my sad duty to draw attention to the fact that we are losing a number of our best stalwarts," began Mr Turjier, at the end of the Council's business. "We are losing Mr E. U, Wyles, one of our oldest and most re* spected member?, who was president when ho took the courageous step of leasing this building, a step of great advantage to us, find one that gave its, if I may say so, an enhanced superiority complex." Hewlett, another honoured member, who could certainly be described as one of the stalwarts of wie Council, He had done work of great value, particularly on questions connected with the important grain industry. Another to gp was Mr P. H. Harris, for many years a member of the Qouncil and a father confessor to all of them. Two other, members who were not standing for election were Mr 33* W, Beed, a man of great use to the Council, and Mr A. L. MacfarJane, who had been particularly valuable during ths discussions on the Maui Ppware, Hq hoped to see Mr Mapjarlane back on the Council. Mr Turner moved that the Chamber should send letters of appreciation to these five retiring Councillors. The vice-president and presidentelect (Mr A. O. Wilkinson) seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The Retiring President. Mr Turner then returned his own behalf for the valuable asgist' anco given him during the tern of his presidency, particularly by the vjcer president (JVlr Wilkinson), who had ably taken his place during his absence abroad, by the treasurer (Mr W. Bqttrell\ and by tho secretary (Mr J, Jt. Sjnith). Although the w«r& had been apologised for doing no better—he had thoroughly enjoyed the office. During the past year the Cham* bpr had accomplished a vast amount of work; it had been fthle to do so because the co-operation between the Council and himself had always been so excellent. Mr L. Oh K. Steven movent that the Chamber should place on record its ke<?s appreciation of the services of Mr Turner, both to' the Chamber and to the community. -4 behalf of the Council, lie warmly commended Mr Turner'? Work, which had not only upheld but increased the Chamber's standing. Mr V. E. Hamilton added his tribute, remarking the many excellent qualities of their retiring president. Mr Steven's motion was carried by acclamation.
