MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. UNEMPLOYMENT EXECUTIVE. The executive of the Ashburton Unemployment Committee met yesterday, when the chairman, Mr E. Kerr, presided. The Unemployment Board wrote stating that the full sum authorised for disbursement under the scheme had been allocated on the most equitable basis, but owing to the amount of funds available and the huge number of men unemployed it was impossiblo to allow any centre the full amount required. A letter along similar lines was received in reply to the committee's protest .regarding the reduction of country districts' allocations. Mr J. P. Hanjatty reported that there were 338 men available for the week ending September 12th as follows: Two-day meh 114, three-day men 150, four-day men 74. The sum allocated for the week was £395 15s, and that required was £568 17s, which left a shortage of £173 2s. Mr Pa,tterson said that if 104 twoday men were given one day, 10 two•day men two days, 150 three-day men two days, 52 four-day men three days, and 22 four-day men four days, they would just about be able to keep within the allocation. They would have to subdivide the men into groups, and give those with most dependents the most work. It was decided to adopt the scheme in general, and leave its working in the hands of Messrs Patterson, Prentice, and Hanratty. Mr Patterson reported that in the country districts men were available as follows:—Springburn 20, Mayfield 5. Mr Hanratty said that the allocation for the week ending September 19th was £533. It was stated that men coming in from the No. 4 A Scheme were making quite a number of new registrations. There would be 485 available for that week, for which £Bl7 18s would be required. It was decided to draw the attention of the Commissioner to the fact, and ask for a larger grant. Mr Prentice stated that the appeal for clothing and boots had not received much response. The demand for food and clothing had not been bo heavy during the last week as previously. Next Year's Piano. Test. . It was stated yesterday that the test pieces for the piano championship (Tucker Trophy) next year would bo "Op. 24, Brahms," "Variations and Fugues on a Theme by Handel," and not Chopin's "Preludes," as was previously announced. The change was made because of the length of the latter, which would occupy 40 minutes, much too long for a test piece. Man's Sever© Injuries. The condition of Mr E. M. Phelps, who was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital last week, suffering from severe internal injuries through accidentally stabbing himself with a butcher's knife, *'as reported last evening to bo satisfactory.
