OLD TIME SOCIAL. l On Thursday evening, St. Paul's Sunday Schoolroom was 'filled when an "old time" social organised by the Papanui Mothers' Union was held. Wijth the women the ballroom dresses were replaced by crinolines, bustles, wide-brim-med ' hats adorned with ostrich plumes, and poke bonnets with jet trimmings, while the inen wore bell-toppers, swal-low-tailed coats, whitrf waistcoats, and side whiskers. Old games, such as Nuts-in-May, Oranges and Lemons, and the Grand Old Duke of York were played, and many of the old-time dances were greatly enjoyed. The music was supplied by Mr Fred Comyns. The winners of the old-time costumes were Mrs Mann and Mr W. A. Wilson, and a special prize to Mr Davis. The winner of a nursery rhyme competition was 'Mrs Woods's group from St. Silas's. During the evening Master Desmond Tomkiea gave a mouth-organ solo, and Miss Joyce Fletcher's junior orchestra gave several, selections. The committee in charge of the arrangements were Mesdames Orbell, Tomkies, Hosking, Moncrief, Caverhill, Plows, D. Barnard, and Pur3e. Mothers' Union. St. Silas's Mothers' Union, met on Thursday afternoon, Mrs Orbell presiding. The response to the appeal for goods to assist St. Martin's House of Help, was very good. The Rev. P. llevell, in thanking the donors, spoke of the many calls made on the House. He also, spoke on the various phases of social ,work. . Last Sunday night, St. Paul's Mothers' Union provided the tea for the Guest House. Mesdames Thomson, Moncricf, and Caverhill served the tea to the twenty-seven-men. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the • Papanui women. Lodgo Social. The fortnightly social of the Forester 's Lodge was' held on Monday evening. Dancing and cards made for the enjoyment of the evening. The music was provided by Mrs C. Smith, and the card-winners were Mr and Mrs J. Cains and Mrs Cobdon. Progress League Social. The monthly social of the Papanui Progress League was held on. Wednesday. There was a large attendance and the evening was a great success, Messrs T. Gates and W. Clarke were in charge and Mr J. Scofield acted as M.C. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mr Fred Comyns. Mr H. Chapman played an extra. A Monte Carlo danco waswon by Mr C. Palmer and Miss D. Brown. During the evening songs .were given by Misses G. Dalley and Billson and Mr J. Sturrock. The' accompaniments were played by Mesdames S. H. .Cox and Sturrock. ' General. Good progress is being made with the formation of the new Waimairi tennis courts. The foundations of three courts have been put down and rolled and are now ready for the first coating of bituminous emulsion.

A deputation from the Progress League, comprising Messrs W. J. Boyce, T: A. Gates, and W. G. Chapman are waiting on the Works Committee of the City Council next Wednesday, in regard to the tar-sealing of a number of roads. Thfe Papanui Amateur Sports Club will conduct a 40-mile cycle road race this afternoon to Rangiora and back.
