OLD COINS.

ro THB EDITOR t>T TBK PHESS Sir. —In one of your issues last week a correspondent asked for information about a coin he had in his possession —a rather uncommon florin. I have one which I think must bo similar to his, although he says his is undated. Mine is dated 1849. On the head 6ide it bears the title "Victoria Regina 1849." The coins are commonly called "Godless florins," because they have not "D.G." on them, nor "F.D." When I say "commonly called" 1 mean that this was tho term given them in the bank I was in in England. During 20 years' service, I specially examined silver when counting it. to trv and obtain these coins, and although I handled thousands upon thousands of pounds of silver, I came across only four or five. I also was on the look-out for fourpenny bits, but I got a number of those, and they curiously enough were chieflv dated 1849. I believe the "Godless florin!' all bore the one date. I would have replied earlier, but am far away from Methven, and only got mv mail (and Press) when I call. —Yours, otc., I. M. TEMPT,F-MAN. Methren, August 26th, 1931.
