RUGBY. PAYNE SHIELD MATCH. OTAGO 'VARSITY V. MERIVALE. Rugby patrons will I>e provided -with an [ excellent, day's fare at, Lancaster Park toI morrow, when two iirbl-class games will be staged. > Tho annual match for tho Payne Trophy r between Otago University and .Morivalc ! should provide the usual bright, attractive Rugby seen in these fixtures. This game 1 will bo preceded by the annual match between Victoria College, Wellington, and Cani terbury College. As both these teams have played brilliantly in their own competitions, it is anticipated that fine football will be 1 turned on. : Otago 'Varsity have a well-balanced side, ; with good forwards and fast, nippy backs. The best known of the rearguard aro D. F. Lindsay, the 1928 All Black, and E. N. Smith, the fast thi-ee-ijuarter. Tho quality of tho forwards may be gauged from the , fact that they have held the strong Kai- ; korai pack on two occasions. I Merivale, in spite of the absence of Day , and Oliver, havo a very well-balanced side, and with nippy backs such as O'Connor, Flewellyn, Rhodes, and Bullivant, should , display high quality football. The curtain-raiser will commence at 1.30 o'clock, and the Payno Trophy gamo at o 1 o'clock. The following are the teams:— I OTAGO UNIVERSITY (Light Blue). 1). I''. Lindsay J. A. McKenzie J. Salt K. Victoria College have earned the reputation of 'having one of tho most inconsistent sides in New Zealand, but at tho samo time they are, on their day, absolutely brilliant, and their record this year in Wellington shows that they are capable of great football Although they were not in the first six to play off for the Wellington premiership they had previously played brilliantly against tho leaders, and were only narrowly beaten by Hutt by 10-9. On the last two Saturdays they have had splendid wins against Berliampore and Mirainar, and must be at tho top of their form. Ruru and Ramson are outstanding backs, tho former making a great name for himself last year, •when he played for Hawke's Bay. The inside backs, Pacey, McKenzie, and Mulvihill, should be seen in some fine concerted work. ' The local University are a much stronger combination than their position in tho championship indicates. To-morrow they will havo a strong side on the field, and will bo well served in tho three-quarter line, as Loveridga and Williams will bo seen out again. King will lead the forwards. °Tho following are the teams: — VICTORIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE (Dark Green). S. Cormnck J. Ruru . F. S. Ramson N. Ilislop D. Mulvihill R. H. McKenzie L. Pacey D. Griffen R. AUSTRALIAN TEAM. STRONG SIDE TO TOUR NEW ZEALAND. (FitOM OCJt OWN CORRESPONDENT.) SYDNEY, August 5. A judicious blending of experience and youth should make tho Australian Ilugby Union team selected to tour New Zealand one of the strongest combinations that has ever crossed the Tasman. Matches played in Sydney last Saturday and Monday—New South Wales versus Queensland and Australia versus Tho Rest—prove that it contains somo prolific scorers, men who are not afraid to swing the ball about, men who specialise in fast open plav, ready to tako advantage of every opening. There should bo some lively games against tho All Blacks, and tho team is bound to be popular with tho public. The average age of tho team is only 23 years, and tho backs average list 31b and the forwards J3st 71b. Hero are particulars of the 25 players selected:,g— Pull Backs Arc st lb Dr. A. W. Bridle (\ictoria) .. la 13.7 There are many players included who are unknown to New Zealand, but their prowess must not be discounted because they lack experience in international Eugby. The team is one of the most carefully selected combinations to leave these shores, and is bound to give a good account of itself. Having the services of Ross, Hemingway and Cowper, the team is well equipped with reliable goal kickers, sadly missed in tho New South Wales team that toured New Zealand three years ago. On that occasion the visitors won only one of the Tests, but actually scored a greater number of ' tries than New Zealand. Ross can be depended upon to kick a goal from almost any angle, and on more than one occasion has proved his ability to kick a goal from the field. He is a dangerous man at all times, and a difficult man to pass. Australia will always feel confident with Ross as the last line of defence. Malcolm will be captain of a touring side for the first time in his career. He is a particularly fine half-back. It has always been his ambition to captain an Australian side—and this is the first truly Australian side sent across the Tasman for 19 years. Clark, the vicecaptain, plays for the Queensland University, and seems to be temperamentally adapted for the position in which ho has been placed. He played for Australian universities last year. Tho selectors state that R. Lindsay (Queensland) would have been selected, but he was unfortunate enough to break a leg last Saturday, and he has gone to hospital instead. ASSOCIATION. CHATHAM CUP.
