FINDS COAL THE BEST. THE "ANGLO" STEAMERS. How are the owners of stoamships faring in the shipping depression as compared with those who in recent years have gone in for motor-ships ? This is a question which has been asked frequently, and an interesting 'reply was given the other c!4y by Sir John imtta, chairman of the Nitrate Steamship Company, in a speech at the annual meeting of the company. 'Xhe Nitrate Producers' Steamship Company owns seven ships. It built in 1928 a motorship, the Anglo-Canadian, OGSO deadweight totis for comparative purposes It was followed by: two steamers the following year the Anglo-African and Anglo-Saxon, each carrying 3980 deadweight' tons. Sir John, who is decidedly smpathetio to! coal, said the company had furthej proof of the superiority., of steam ,ov:er Diesel-engined vessels ill recent louiid voyages to Australia;. outwards in ballast, which he thought pn> vided a good test. Of course, :he . added, Diesels have a distinct advantage, when trading where oil is .cheap,, and coal. espensiv« or of poos quality^
