SHARP EARTH SHOCK.
CENTRAL AND NORTHERN HAWKE'S BAY. VERY LITTLE DAMAGE DONE. (PMS3 ASSOCIATION TWJSGEAM.) HASTINGS, July 29. An earthquake, which, the instrument at Hastings recorded very similarly to the one it recorded at 3 a.m. on June 23rd last, was experienced here, at 11.44 o 'clock this morning. .The recorder (Mr De Denne) judges the centre of this disturbance at from 50 to 100 miles north of Hastings. A short, severe earthquake . shock was experienced in Waipukurau at 11.45 this morning,, followed by a quivering tremor. It was the third most severe since February. 3rd, and. residents rushed into the streets in alarm. No damage is reported. The shock . was described, as a terrible jolt. Porangahau was badly shaken at 11.45 this morning, the earthquake being in an east-to-west direction. Crockery and other movable articles - t were thrown from shelves. There'was -minor damage only, but the ■ settlers ? "were thoroughly frightened. The siock was very severe in the Marigaorapa district. Many chimneys were brought down, and there "was con-, siderable minor damage. A sharp earthquake at 11.45 this morning brought Dannevirke - business people hurriedly into. the streets; No damage is* reported. ' A WELLINGTON REPORT. (PEI33 ASSOCIATION ■ TXIXOJEUX.) WELLINGTON, July 29. . The earthquake shock was just perceptible in /Wellington, and w&s elt by very few people. A record was obtained of it at the Kelburn Observatory. ' ' .: RECORDED AT CHRISTCHURCH. Records made of the shock kt the , Christchurch Magnetic Observatory indicate that it was not absolutely sud- * den at its point of origin. Three phases Were recorded: the first at-llhr 44min 17sec, the second at llhr -45min 16 sec, and the third at llhr 46min 23sec. The amplitude of the ground movement was about one-twentieth of a metre. i . . . ■ •* The shock was not of . sufficient magnitude to be felt by people. /• •
