FARM DAIRYING INSTRUCTION.
A PRESENT NEED. >*' ————— FACTORY MANAGERS URGE NATIONAL SCHEME. The urgent need for a national system of farm dairy instruction, especially in view of the present economic conditions, was urged by speakers at the conference of New Zealand Dairy Factory Managers yesterday. The Government was charged with excus- ! ing itself from this responsibility on ! the ground of its present difficulties, but it was maintained that these in- . creased the necessity for putting such a scheme into immediate operation. Mr J. L. Taylor said that it appeared that the Department of Agriculture intended to ignore the recommendations of the two recent Dairy Conferences concerning farm dairying instruction. The Minister had assured the conferences that the Department would do all in its power to improve the quality of New Zealand produce, and that could not be done without instruction. A strong recommendation should go from the conference to urge the Government to provide a full national system of farm dairying instruction. Mr J. Middleton said that the Government thought that present economic conditions excuse it from carrying out its earlier intention, but in reality it was more necessary to advance the work now than at any other time. The North Island was better off than the South in the matter of dairy instruction.
An Otago member said that the southern farmers were undoubtedly much- behind. Though the Government said that it could not afford the scheme now, in actuality it could not afford to do without it.
Mr Taylor 's motion to the effect that a recommendation should be forwarded to the Minister for Agriculture urging the necessity of a national scheme of farm dairy instruction was carried.
