The first Aovangi ski championship week at Mt. Cook was brought to a close last night at the Hermitage, with a carnival dinner and fancy dress ball. The costumes were brilliant and original, and the large dancing room was filled to capacity. During the evening the prizes won at the ski meeting were presented by Mrs F. W. Furkert. Mr and Mrs Macarthy Iteid ( Wellington) entertained more than five hundred of their friends at an afternoon reception held this week at the Hotel St. George. About two hundred of the guests played bridge, and the remainder enjoyed a musical programme. The hostess woro a honeycoloured French laco frock mounted on soft black satin and made with n bolero coat and jabot of honey-colourocl satin. Mrs Montgomery was th© youngest daugli°_f the late Mr John Harper, ol Christchurcli, who arrived in Lyttelton in 1850 in the ship Randolph, and had resided in Nelson for about nine years. There is a family of two sons— Messrs L. N. and R. H. Montgomery, of Nelson; and three daughters—Miss v. Montgomery (Hastings), Mrs Sansoni (Awatere Valley), and Mrs H. Mauchamp (Christcliurch). There" are also eight grandchildren.

SPORTS DANCE. I" aid of the funds of the Waimate to Christchurcli road race, a very successful dance was held at the Ferry road Hall last, night under the auspices of Beg. Stillwell's Dance Assembly. Scenic representations adorned the walls of tho hall, and baskets of ferns and coloured festoons hung from the ceiling. Musie was supplied by Lcs Grummit't's Orchestra.

CANTERBURY AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.

ANNUAL DANCE. A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. Within the hospitable walls of Canterbury Agricultural College at Lincoln, many friends o£ the College, and of the students, the members of tho staff, and of the Board of Governors, were entertained last night at a particularly enjoyable dance —the annual social gathering of the College, which is regarded by hundreds of young people as tho most important dance of the season.

Tlie hall was decorated with lines of rari-coloured lights and with baskets of greenery suspended from the ceiling, while shades of navy blue and old gold —the College colours—softened tho electric lights. In the entrance hall were stately ti-trees and masses of cinerarias and the long corridors were panelled and festooned with navy and old gold. Supper was served in the Board loom, where the tables were decorated with lovely narcissi, jonquils, and daphne sent specially from Blenheim for the occasion, and the main supper room was decorated with vari-eoloured cinerarias in pots.

Music was supplied by Fritz Seymour's Orchestra.

Tho visitors were welcomed by Professor It. E. Alexander, Director of the College, and Mrs Alexander, the latter wearing a handsome gown of black lace and georgette, lightened with a posy of violets, freesias, and daphne, and a bridgo coat of gold brocaded lame, with upstanding rucked collar. Miss Mary Alexander, who assisted her parents in the entertainment of their guests, wore a graceful frock of malachite greCn georgette, with narrow belt clasped with a brilliant buckle and a coatee to match the frock. Miss K. Martin (Martinborough), who is at present Mrs Alexander's guest, wore a lovely model frock of bottle green fishnet, and a bridge coat of gold tissue boldly patterned with pink roses. Mrs Weston wore a pervenche blue lace frock and a black panne velvet coatee patterned with orange rosebuds; Mrs Sidey wore a frock of black satin with long fully flared skirt; Mrs Frankel wore a frock of crepe tourraine conventionally patterned in beige, flame, and black; Mrs Calder's attractive dress was of pale primrose shadow lace and her gold lame bridge coat had a collar of fur. Mrs Scott wore a black satin dress and a blue and gold bridge coat patterned in small design and finished with white fur collar and cuffs. Mrs Muirson wore n black satin frock. Miss Armour's black panne velvet frock was lightened with whito flowers, and Miss B. Hose wore n pretty frock of lapis lazuli lac 3 trimmed with rows of fine eilk braid.

Mrs John Deans wore a black georgette and faconne frock opening over a front panel of gold lace. She was accompanied by her daughters, Misses Norah and Nancy Deans, the former wearing a patterned ninon frock in autumn colouring, and Miss Nancy Deans wearing a patterned ninon in shades of blue, yellow, and pink, the colours being repeated in the frills of plain georgette that weighted the skirt. Mrs H. G. Denham wore a handsome frock of black souplo satin mid a eoateo of black miroir velvet, effectively trimmed with largo gaily coloured- floral motifs. Mrs Rennie wpre a black lace frock mounted on black eolanese and a black and gold" brocaded bridge coat.

DANCE AT DIXIELAND. The Xga Toa Club, a group of men students who take a prominent part in the social life of Canterbury College, arranged a dance which was held at Dixieland last night, and which was a particularly cheery and enjoyable gathering. Music was supplied by the Collegians' Orchestra, and during the evening an exhibition dance was given by Miss Iris Edmonds and Mr Desmond Day. The members of the club who were responsible for tho dance arrangements were Messrs T. Evans, G. Watt, and X. L. TJniackc. HOME ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION. At a well-attonded meeting of the Homo Economics Association, held last night in tho Lecture Hall at the Public Library, Mrs M. I. Shaw gave" some very helpful advice to members on tho art of dressmaking. • Mrs Shaw showed how to draft a pattern according to measurements, and cut and fit a foundation pattern which could be used for tho simplest or the most complicated frock. The lecturer demonstrated the correct way to pleat a skirt, always making the pleat wider at the hem, and how to insert a flare, fit a collar or a sleeve, and cut and 'fit undergarments. Individual patterns, Mrs Shaw claimed, make dressmaking easy, and no longer the hidden mystery it was once considered. Mrs Shaw was accorded a vote of thanks for her instructive lecture.

BAPTIST BIBLE SCHOOL RALLY.

The annual missionary rally of the Young Women's Baptist Bible Classes of Canterbury district was hold in the School Hall of the Oxford Terrace Church on Sunday last, with an attendance of about 260.

This meeting, held at the eloso of the financial year of the Union, is the occasion for the presenting of the year's offerings for mission work, from the various classes. Those classes prevented through distance' from attending, appoint Christchurch representatives to hand in their amounts.

Thompson, president of the Canterbury Baptist Young Women's Bible Class Union, occupied the chair, an<? on behalf of the Baptist girls, welcomed representatives of the Methodist Young Women's Bible Classes, the Baptist Young Men's B.C. Union, the Baptist Women's Missionary Union, the Inter-Bible Class Council, and the Y.W.C.A. and the Y.M.C.A. The address of the afternoon was given by Miss 11. M. Rice, who since 1914 has worked amongst the women of East Bengal,' as a representative of the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society. Her interesting address contained stories of some of the tragedies she had witnessed in the lives , of India's women, and also some of the successes which had been gained through the work of the mission. She was presented with a beautiful bouquet as a mark of affection from the girls of the Canterbury Union, and was then asked to receive, 011 behalf of the Baptist Missi6nary Union, the amounts which the class treasurers then brought forward. As each amount was handed in a brief account of how the money had been raised was given. The. total from all classes amounted to £240.

The singing of the Doxology closed thjj afternoon meeting, which was then followed by a tea to which''a' ; large' number stayed.

BALL AT FAIRLIE. The Aoraugi Hall, Fair lie, was well filled on the occasion of the first annual ball of the newly-formed Ex-Pupils Association. An energetic committee had made excellent arrangements, with the result that the evening was voted one of the best held in the township for a considerable time. Among those present were Mesdames C.
