MADEIRA REVOLT.
RUMOURS OF FIGHTING DENIED. (I'SIIEB PRESS ASSOCIATION—Bi SLECTBIC TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.) (Received April 30th, 7.40 p.m„) LISBON, April 30. The departure of a hospital ship to Madeira has caused rumours of sanguinary fighting. The Government stated to-night, however, that no fighting had occurred. Operations had been suspended, owing to the Bishop of Funchal's mediation. OFFICERS CASHIERED. (Received May Ist, 1.12 a.m.) LONDON, April 30. Three infantry regiments and three artillery batteries have been disbanded, and 32 officers, including the leader of the revolt, General Diaz, have been cashiered. The latest message from Madeira naively says: "All quiet except for talk." DEMAND FOR UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER. MADEIRA, April 29. The Minister for Marine, Commander Masquita Guimaraes, commanding the punitive expedition, refueed the Bishop of Funchal's offer to act as mediator, declaring thnt nothing but unconditional surrender was acceptable. STUDENT MOVEMENT. RIOTS AND THE RED FLAG.
LISBON, April 29. A serious student movement against the dictatorship of General Antonio CamoTia, who ie Presideht of the Republic, is developing in the universities throughout the country. In Lisbon the Students rioted and hoisted the. red flag. In Oporto students bari-ed themselves in. the School of Medicine and resisted the police. Finally they rushed out, some climbing down the scaffolding, which collapsed, one being killed axld 1? injured.
