ASHBURTON. VITAL STATISTICS. The number of births registered in the Ashburton district for April shows an increase of four, when compared with those for the corresponding month last year. The number of deaths and marriages shows a decrease of one each. The figures for April are as follows, those for the corresponding month last year being given in parentheses: — Births 25 (21), deaths 11 (12), marriages 9 (10); Salvation Army. • . About 25 young people of the loeal branch of the Salvation Army will visit Christchurch ' during the week-end, to attend the annual Young People's Council,, which will be conducted by Commissioner J. Cunningham, on Sunday. Reconstructing East Street. A start with the reconstruction of j East • street between Havelock street I and Tancred street, preparatory to putting down bitumen, was made by the contractors yesterday, when the scarifier commenced 'rembving the uneven asphalt surface which has been down for many years. Bankruptcies. No bankruptcies- were recorded . in Ashburton during April, against four for the same month last year. Prospecting for Gold. Applications for gold-mining licenses on the Ninety-Mile Beach just north of the mouth of the Rakaia river, have been lodged at the Ashburton Magistrate's Court by Messrs G. Magnus and F. W. Manton, of Wellington, and these will come before the Warden's Court at Ashburton on June 26th. These two make tlie third application, which has been lodged at Ashburton in respect of gold-mining on this beach in the last four years. Golf. Acclimatisation Society Nominations, j Five nominations have been received | for the vacancies on the Council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society, caused by the retirement by rotation of four members. Of these Messrs G. Cromie and J. Donn hive been renominated. The other nominees are Messrs H. G. Kemp, E. W. Millichamp, G. Kelly. Messrs W. H. Robinson and F. Clark have not sought re-nomina-tion. As the number of nominations exceeds the number of vacancies, an election will be necessary. Mothers' Union. Mrs A. J. Petrie presided over a well-attended meeting of the Mothers' Unjon held yesterday. The Rev. A. J. Petrie delivered the first of a series or lectures on the doctrine of religion in the home. He was thanked for his address. It was reported that Mrs West-Watson (Christchurch) would visit Ashburton this month when all the members of the Mothers' Union in the rural Deanery would attend to meet her. RAKAIA. On Wednesday evening an enjoyable social under the auspices of the Rakaia Football Club was held. There was ,a good attendance; Competitions were won by Mrs Tatterson and Mr Brown. The annual' meeting of the Rakaia sub-branch of the Plunket Society was' held in the library on- Thursday afternoon. Mr G. S. Hardy presided over a good attendance. Visitors were present ] from the Ashburton branch. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Dobbs, Cooke, Finlay, and Brown. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Dobbs in the. illness of her husband was passed. The. president, Mrs Henderson, reported that the work of the subbranch had been carried on satisfactorily throughout the year. The balance-sheet presented by the treasurer, Mr A. S. Henderson, showed a credit balance of. £l3O 4s Bd. The Plunket nurse's' annual report showed:—Visits to rooms: Adults t 573, babies 470, older children 197, total ! 1240; new cases 23.
