[By Fiagstick.] For several reasons most, of • the golfing community will regret that the Council of the New Zealand Golf Association found it necessary to approach the New South Wales Council with a proposal to break the continuity of the contests for the Kirk-Windeyer Cup by postponing the fixture for a year. It may .be true that-the Council had approached all the players whom they deemed worthy of inclusion in a representative team, and that the refusals were so numerous and so definite that it seemed hopeless to persevere. Of last year's victorious team—T. H. Horton, E. M. Macfarlane; J. L. Black, and K. Ross —the first-named had early advised tiie Council that he would not be available, while E. M. Macfarlane and Dr. Ross, have not been able lately to devote sufficient time to golf to enable them to maintain themselves at the peak of their form, but apparently J. L, Black could have gone, and presumably A. D. S. Duncan, last year s captain, as well. The latter was not at his best when the contest was held here a year ago. and stood out ot the team, but on recent performances has quite regained his form. Witn these two as a nucleus, a sound—if not the Dominion's best —team could surelv have been selected by the inclusion of some of the younger players who have . lately come into prominence. There may have been financial obstacles in the wav also, but one would expect that these would not prove altogether insuperable. The outstanding performance of the week is J. E. Gudgeon's return or 77—ig—61 in a stroke handicap at Rawhiti. ' The municipal : course has benefited 'enormously by the cleaningup which it was given m February, and conditions for play are, compared with those prevailing last year, auis comfortable, and play is. not held up to any extent by the "lost ball * nuisance. As yet the course is by no means an easy one, but good play is stimulated by difficulties, and as shown by their recent match with Lyttelton the Rawhiti players are making excellent progress in the game. L. W Besley with 85-20-65 and B. A. Miles with 87-22-65 wer<} also under the difficult par of the course, equalled by C. A. Cooper with 81-16-66. It is still too early to decide whether the seed-mixture, clover and poa pratenais, is going to provide good putting aurfaoes on the greens. Probably the poa pratensis, with its longer growing period, will gradually become dominant, ousting the clover; the greens would then need very careful handling to keep the surface in good shape, neither too long and bristly, nor too short and bare. Future developments will be interesting to jvatch. Among the casual patrons of the course the standard of golfing etiquette is still far from high, and the two controlling Councils might \ well consider the appointment of a course steward, with power to inflict appropriate penalties, ©specially for breach of the rule that parties on the tee should wait until the players in front have played their second shots and have moved out of range. Neglect of the rule may easily lead to accidents, possibly fatal ones. From Harewood, also, two exceptional performances are noted, R. .G. Malcolmson, in the second qualifying round of the captain's trophy, returning a card of 83-12-71, ana L. JV' Cooke in the morning stroke handicap, 87-16-71. As the Harewood scratch score of 74 is only a stroke or two above the strict par of the course these figures mean verv good going. The bacK-markers, R. T. Tosswill and A. R. Blank, were playing well up to form with rounds of 79, 78, and 79, 79 respectively (gross), and will give a strong lead to the club team in their coming match ' against Ashburton. The first important events of tb o British golfing season, the OxroraCambridge match, which was , g this year over the Royal St. Ge rg; linksf *t Sandwich the P^ 310 tournament at Roehampton, and . . English amateur (close) championship at Hunstanton, have already been decided, and results of , tb ? r them should be available by next mail. In the near future the fixtures are the 36-hole stroke competition for tne "Golf ' Illustrated' Gold Vase . (M y „ nwifessional tournament at SkDort TMarilthk and the British imateur championship at Westward Ho (Mav 18th) The doings of the professionals .are of especial i mterert tbis vear because the British team /holHers) will be defending their title +n+be Rvder Cup at Columbus, Ohio, Awards the end of Jung, and just Sto the date of the American open. Apparently the P,G.A. at Home are soaring no pains to secure the best talent available, and for all their preliminary tests are using the American ball. It is unfortunate that the most brilliant of the younger generation, T, H. Cotton, will not be available, as he declined. to be bound by tne restrictions as to travel imposed by t" e managing committee appointed by tne P G.A. E. Whitcombe (captain). Mitchell, Duncan, and Compston are regarded as certainties but for the remaining places there will many contenders, only one of whom, McCuitoch. of Troon, comes from Scotland. RICHMOND HILL CLUB. The following will represent Richmond Hill in the annual match versus the Akaroa ulut> at Akaroa during the week-end:— _ _ D. C. Johnston, J B. Bruges, E H. Hamilton, T. S. Knight, Tt. D. .M.
