WELLINGTON WOOL SALE.

COARSE LOTS SELL WELL.

MARCS VALUES NOT maintained. (PRERB ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) , WELLINGTON, April 17. 'A'lie fifth and final wool sale of the season h<Sld in Wellington to-day failed to the peak prices realised last month. Compared with Wellington March prices values were down all round except.for one or two sorts that had a special appeal to Japanese buyers. The catalogue, which totalled approximately 34,000 bales, was the largest offering made at a Wellington sale for several years. There was a full bench of buyers representative of all sections of the trade. The sale started at 8 a.m. a full hour earlier than usual, and lasted just Qn 5$ hours.

The offerings, which included fairly large quantities of HaWke's Bay and Poverty Bay wools comprised mostly average top-making sorts, and there was also a proportion of poor qualities, Bidding was keen up to a point, and fairly well spread. There was exoited .competition for many desirable lines and it was early noticeable that the March level would not be reached. Passings were fairly frequent. Continental and Bradford buyers were the mainstays of the sale for halfbreds, and average crossbreds, America and Japan bid keenly for super crossbreds, Prance for lambs' wool and bellies and pieces, of Fhich Dominion mills also secured a fair share. The feature of the sale was the keen buying by Japan of coarse wpols. It was noticeable that under this demand these sorts topped last sale's prices, and in many cases beat the top grades of the same clips. The Japanese forced Lincoln and Lincoln cross wools as high as 9d. Compared with Wellington March prices, were id lower, super crossbreds id to 3d lower, fine crossbreds fd lower, inferior crossbreds 3d to Id lower, lambs' wool 2d lower, and bellies, pieces, and locks 3d lower.
