MONTHLY MEETING. The Canterbury Education Board met j yesterday, Mr W. A. Banks presiding. 1 Prosent were: Messrs E. Wild, H. J. 1 Bigno,ll, J. "W. Preen, W. P. Spencer. 1 G. W. Armitage, J. J. Hurley, C. S. Thompson, W. Johnson, J. G. Gow, and S.?R. Evison. 1 -* The Buildings Committee reported that tho Department had sanctioned the . Board's proposals for the sale of The teaks property, comprising the school 'and 10 acres of land; and of the Medbury School and 7ac lr. 33p. of - land. <&o action was to be taken regarding the sale of Mason's School, and 10 ;ac. lr. 15p. of land, until the Department advised its intentions concerning the suggested removal of the school building to Hawarden for manual training'purposes. The Board had been authorised to sell by auction ihe old school buildings and site at Kaiapoi, Tenders were to be called for the purchase of the school buildings and site «t Spotswood. The Department advised _that a grant had been allocated for the, rebuilding of the Anama School,'which had been destroyed by fire. • •

Consolidation. - 1 Concerning the conveyance of children and consolidation of schools- the Appointment's Committee reported that

the Department had advised that it could ndt agree to the closing of Glen Kowhai School and the conveyance of the pupils to Kaikoura. A meeting of representatives of all, committees con-, cerned in the Pleasant Point School was to be held there on April 22nd." A letter had been received from the Waltham Committee protesting against the opening of a Refuge House in tha district.

It was resolved* that the City Council'be advised of the Board's sympathy with tho attitude of the committee. The Agricultural and Manual and Technical Committee reported that tho West Coast Agricultural and ; Pastoral Association's Shield competition was won by Ngahere (130), with Ru Ru and Barrytown second equal (123). The supervisor reported that since the last meeting advantage had been taken of the No.* 5 Unemployment Scheme to have the Board's Aranui plantation cleared of the broom and

lupin which were growing on the area. The moi. employed had done very good work. They had also cut" down the lupin growing on the school . grounds. When the No. 5 Unemployment Scheme was started again it was proposed to. have the work of replacement of "losses" carried out by these men. - Advice had been received from the Department stating that no orders, for handwork supplies' were being ■ placed by the Department for 1932. The communication recommends that any surplus material held by schools should be recalled to the Board's store, so that I some, stocks may" be on hand for handwork purposes during 1932. It is also i suggested that the fullest use possible " should be made * of waste,materials.-. It was: proposed to send out a circulnr all schools along the lines suggested by

the jbepartment, also, advising ' thein that no supplementary issues of material would be made for this year. . It waß decided that the term "Emergency drill" should be used in preference to "Earthquake drill." The following appointments' were confirmed:— i Sole teachers: Glen KowhrCi, Miss J. G.
