NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

TIDES. It mil be lixgh tide at 4.r»l p.m. 011 the beach, to-day and at 0.15 p.m. in the river. To-morrow: 5.2 a.m. and 0.26 p.m. on the beach, and 5.46 a.m. and 6.10 p.m. in the river. Dance. Members of the Now Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade hold n very enjoyable dance in the "Oasis 1 ' on. Wednesday evening. Spirited music was played by Stokes's Orchestra., and Messrs Ij. H. Beardsley and C. L. Stokes were Masters <i.f Ceremonies. Tho proceeds were to assist the funds for tho brigade's expenses at. the iiro brigade competitions to bo held at Temuka shortly. Plunket Society. At the monthly meeting of the New Brighton brunch of the Plunket Society, there were present —Mesdames N. McGillivray (in the chair), \V. Dean, S. Grammer, J. 11. Shaw, W. Flavell, L. Lawrence, K. S. Pearson, H. Throp, G. Beilby, J. Lovell, Nurse "Wilson, and Miss Ilulme. An interesting report on the activities of the Biennial Conference was made by Mrs McGillivray. Tho secretary reported that the donation-box had yielded the sum of 2s 6d for the month of November, and that the arrangements in connexion with the miniature bazaar to bo held at the North Beach Gymnasium on December 13th were well in hand. . Mrs W. Flavell was appointed a visitor to the Plunket Booms for December Nurse Wilson's report showed that the Plunket Booms had been visited by 114 adults, 143 babies, and 85 children; 70 homes had been visited. Tennis Party. Mrs H. Throp was hostess at a delightful tennis party in aid of the funds of the local branch of the Plunket Society. There was a large attendance, including many visitors from Christchurch. On behalf of tie Society, Mrs McGillivray thanked those present for their donations. The winners of the various competitions were Mesdames B. Miles, Uren, Spence, and Miss Low. Boy Scouts. The Chief Commissioner, Colonel P. C. Fenwick, together with District Commissioner W. 11. Montgomery, will visit tho borough this afternoon for the opening of the new Scout house in tho Kawhiti Domain. Tho visitors will be officially welcomed by tho Mayor of New Brighton (Mr J. 11. Shaw). A Scout rally will be held and will be attended by many Scouts from tho City. Amateur Cycling. At a committee meeting of the newlyformed New Brighton Amateur Cycling Club, it was decided to hold a iive-mile race for unregistered riders under 18 years, on Wednesday evening next, entries to close with tho secretary (Mr 11. J. Savage) or deputy club captain (Mr A. Branch) on Monday evening lieit. « Pleasant Point Yacht Club. Because of the strong north-west wind and generally unfavourable conditions, tho Pleasant Point Yacht and Boat Club was compelled to abandon. | the second of its series of races for tho Ostler Cnp. Tho race will bo sailed I during tho present week-end. Tho cltib's new headquarters at Bridge street aro almost completed, and tho official opening will take place shortly. Tbe club will make an endeavour to represent tho Estuary Clubs in the (Jornwell Cup contest. This afternoon there will be eleven fcoats from Pleasant Point participating in the regatta at licdclifTs. The prizes iiave been presented by the Pleasant Point Club. School Committee. At tho monthly meeting of the School Committee there were present: Mr F. I). Muirson (chairman), Mesdames J. Bellamy, A. M. Brooks, and M. Moses, Messrs J. S. Ainsworth, B. Dean, A. E. Lawry, and T. Robins (secretary). A letter was received from tho Education Board advising that tho maintenance foreman bad been instructed to accede to tho committee's request to paint the benches in tho science room of the secondary department, to clean and repaint tho interior of tho dental clinic, and to paint both tho interior and exterior of the old wooden part of tho primary school. Tho letter stated that the Manual and Technical Committee had been requested to deal with tho School Committee's application for the establishment of a manual training centre at New Brighton. In connexion with tho breaking-up ceremonies, it, was decided to hold a fancy dress danco with songs and folk dancing in place of the usual school concert. On Wednesday, December 17th", the infant classes and Standards I. and 11. will assemble at 2.30 p.m. in Joyland, and Standards 111., IV., V., and VX. at 8 p.m. On Thursday, December 18th, Father Christmas will arrivo at the main school at 10 a.m., and at the South Brighton School at 11 a.m. Mr K. O. Brooks lias consented to act as Santa Claus. The committee baa approved of the sum of &6 being expended ou tho Christmas tree for the infant classes. Arrangements for the annual borough picnic were discussed, and it was decided to call a public meeting to arrange for a. combined schools' and borough picnic. The meeting will bo held in tho main school on Wednesday, December 10th, at S p.m. Mrs M. Moses was appointed a delegate to tho School Committees' Association. Card Evenings. On Thursday evening the usual weekly card evening in aid of tho kindergarten was held at Mrs J. Bellamy's home in Lonsdale street. Tho prize-winners were Mesdames Schrimshaw, Queree, and McLachlan, Messrs MeLachlan and Kishworth. Next week will bo tho last of these evenings, the series of which will bo brought to a close by a whist drive in Joyland on December lltli. The New Brighton Croquet Club held n ilag evening in the pavilion on Thursday. Prizes were won by Mr 3 Smith, Miss Wilson, and Mr Baker. Mr Smart won a special prize. Preo Kindergarten. Next Thursday afternoon the children of the New Brighton kindergarten will bo entertained at the Joyland Theatre at a "Christmas tree party." Golf. On Sunday a men's team from the Kawhiti Club will play a match against Avoudale at the Avondalo links. Tennis. In the femrth round of the Canterbury inter-club competition, New Brighton defeated Redcliffs by 9 sets to 7. Last Wednesday a Yankee tournament was held on the local courts in aid of the Plunket Society. There were over 40 women present, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent.

Amateur Athletics. New Brighton athletes continue to win laurels at the Lancaster Park meetings. On Wednesday evening B. H, Jorgenson ran a fine race in the 100 yds, ■winning with something to Bpare. Mis 3 V. Boyd ran well in the women's events, arid in the relay races the local team, consisting o£ B. Marriott, F. Gullacher, H. V. Williams, and K. H. Jorgenson, ca'mo first over distances of -140, 4-10, 220, and 230 yds. At a committee meeting on Thursday evening it was decided to hold an evening meeting in the Rawhiti Domain on Thusday, December ISth, at 6.30 p.m. The following races will be included: — Men's events, 300 yds, one mile, 410 yds, 220yde and 100 yds relay. Women's events: 100 yds relay. Entrants in relays will bo started according to handicaps. It was decided ro adopt ths origiual procedure of charging no entrance fee, in order to assist unemployed members and so popularise tlio open meetings. Bowling. This afternoon three rinks from ths local club will represent Country at Opawu. Four rinks will play friendly games with Linwood on the home green. On Wednesday evening the New Brighton colts' tearu was defeated by Papanui in a match for the Colts' Shield. A rink skipped by F. Muirsou was successful in defending the Watson Badges against a team from the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club in a match played on Thursday evening. Following is a progress report of the results of the club competitions:— Booster —If. Bishop defeated the holder, A. Watson, for the Booster. Singles—Third round: Whitely beat Pnttrick, Bisman beat Glasgow. Greenslade Ferns—Besley's rink defeated Dean's rink for the Greenslade Ferns. Croquet Notes. A junior B flag match was played between Barrington and New Brighton on the New Brighton green. Following are the results (Barrington names mentioned first): — Doubles—Miss Maze and Mrs Clark 26, Mrs W. Cooke and Mrs Smith 13; Mrs Giddens and Mrs Jones 24, Mrs J. Cooke and Mrs A. Dey 26; Mrs Memmott and Miss Mc.lnman 23, Mrs Blunt and Mrs Ward 26. Singles—Miss Maze 24, Mrs W. Cooke 26; Mrs Clark 26, Mrs Smith 11; Mrs Giddens 26, Mrs Dey 14; Mrs Memniott 21, Mrs Blunt 26; Miss Mclnmaa 0, Mrs Ward 12. Band's Card Tournament. The weekly euchre tournament conducted by the Christmas Carnival Committee of the New Brighton Municipal Band was held in the Band Boom on Wednesday evening last. A largo number of supporters were present, and an enjoyable evening was spent. The prizewinners were Mesdames Warne, Purden, and O 'Donnell, and Messrs Morten, Cox, Moody, and Philpott. Tho committco has decided to hold a Christmas Fair in tho Band Boom 011 December 20th. Mesdames Brookes, Weir, and Stevens will be the organising committee.
