SURF BOAT FOR MATAI.

llustraW'il iu an ovor.-eius journal is a eurf boat of a typi- which, although common over* >sea.s. is strango to those more familiar with craft used in Home waters. She has been built by the Southampton Launch and Boat Company for carrying on the New Zealand Government vessel Matai. The boat, which measures L'Oft overall, has a beam of Bft and draught of about 3ft. She is constructed with double-skin tenk, having a total thicknesH of IJin. The timbers are of rock elm. The craft is provided with an enclosed engine compartment, the power plant comprising a 14 h.p. two-cylinder Parsons engine which sivcß a speed of seven knots. This particu lar design ifi necessary in view of the fact that bars must be crossed, and owing to the necessity for frequently beaching the craft, a large amount of sheer, which amounts to lift, i« essentia}. The hull is of double-ended design. The heavy onk keel is provided with an iron band which runs the full length of the hull. .Stout lifting genr is installed for raising and lowering the boat, and towing bollards, together with a mnst and lug sail of moderate area, nro provided.

Din, Mrs Tenika and two children, Dr. Smith, Rev. Father McMontigle, Messrs Drew. Thorpe. Lanauze. Lewis, and Master B. Hawley.

Miss Raphael (Apia to Wellington), Mrs nnd Master Morgan (Apia to Wellington) Mr and Mrs Head (Niue to Wellington) Mr Head (Niue to Wellington), and four constables from Apia to Wellington.
