Paquita will be ridden in the Auckland Cup by the stable horseman, G. Humphries, and First Sight, who will not be produced in the Cup, will have the services of A. 32. Ellis in his other engagements at the Meeting. Two Divisions. Provision has been made for two divisions in tho Lagmhor Plate at Aehburton to-day, but as the acceptors total only two more than the number allowed, likely withdrawals will probably make the arrangement unnecessary. Some Good Mounts. A. Eastwood intends to be present at tho 'Woodville Meeting next month, his Jmounts including Black Songster and Bold Front. He will also attend the Auckland Summer Meeting, and has been engaged for Gay Crest in the Cup and AutOpay in the Railway Handicap, and he Will Tide Great Star in his engagements after the first day. Riders at Ashburton. Biding engagements for to-day's racing at Ashburton are as follows:—D. O'Connor, Footfall; G. Salt, Jael; A. 3£*stwood, Coll, Mount Boa, Palmary; S. Bryce, Lorette; W. Cooper, Parysia; JR. Heed, Knockany, True Shaft, fiocksley; G. Humphries, Shatter, Craigavon, Ooroner; A. Messervey, Eclair, Proud Snight, Pharaoh, The Raider; E. Me<.;ann, Bamo; I. J. Ellis, Glenrowan, P*ain tiller. An Awkward Name. Mistress Quickly, whose name upjpMurs in the list for the Lagmhor Plate *fc Ashburton to-day, is a thrce-yeaT-old filly by Solferino, from Dame Strait--saee, and is owned by her breeder, Mr J. S. Barrett. A Xikoly Galloper. Invictus is due to have his first race in tho Lagmhor Plato at Ashburton today, He is a classy looking three-year-old by St. Petersburg from Mydora, by Sarto, and has shown much promise by his track essays. He received a short course of training last season, but after being gelded a few months back he was given a spell. He has done well since being brought in about six weeks ago, but is hardly forward enough to be seen at his best to-day. Conditions in Belgium. The breeding of thoroughbred horses seems to be in a bad way in Belgium. Most noted breeding establishments in that country aro, or were, owned by Mr Wittouck, one of the leading racing men of the Continent. Recently Mr WittOuek held a dispersal sale, and only six colts changed hands. The average price obtained for these was £l7O. It i» Btated that there are now only two bTfleders in Belgium. As CO per cent, of the races in Belgium are reserved iflor horses bred in the country, good dlatm yearlings should be an attractive investment. Entry feeß are very low *&d aie added to tho stakes in every lifece. An things are, there does not' aps*aT to bo much inducement for anyone ■bo invest money in tho breeding industry. Prices Obtained for yearlings •WOtlld not cover the cost of service fees 5a most other countries. Xrtadlag English Jockey. Gordon Eichards ended a remarkAbl6 run of 55 consecutive losers when 3b« W6n the Scarborough Stakes at Newmarket on Tea Party 11. at the end of last month. It was his first success sinee scoring on Somerset on October 16th. Fox is now leading Richards by nine in the contest for the championship, having tidden 121 winners against Gordon's 112.

! TROTTING NOTES.

j Reminders, j The grass track at New Brighton | will be open this morning and on TuCS- ] day for horses engaged for tho Club's j Meeting on Saturday next, j Acceptances for tho New Brighton i T.C.'s Summer Meeting close at 12 noon j on Tuesday. t Nominations for tho Ashburton T.C.'s | Summer Meeting close on Tuesday. ' Nominations for the Greymoutli T.C.'s ■ Meeting close on Wednesday next. i Handicaps for tho Auckland T.C.'s Summer Meeting will bo published on ' Tuesday. ■ The monthly meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Associa- ' tion will bo held on Friday next. ! Handicapping. In the Metliven Cup, 4min 4'2sec clasa, ■ on October 4th, the two imported horses, ; Banffshire Lad and Our George, were : engaged, the former being placed on ' 4min -Usee and the latter on 4min 40sec, j a difference of 12 yards. In tho Bows' hill Handicap, of a mile and a quartor, : 3min class, to l>e decided at tho New : Brighton Meeting Banffshire I/ad is '( 36yds behind, and Our George is 84yds i behind, n difference of 48yds. In tho j Dash Handicap of one mile, "mill 19sec i class,' Our George is on 24yds behind, ; while Banffshire Lad is on tho limit, j Thero is a very great discropancy be- ! tween the handicapping at Methven and i that at New Brighton. Incidentally, i ilio two horses mentioned aro trained | in the one stable, although by different ! trainers. i | A Promising Pacer. Nyallo Silk, engaged in the Melrose Handicap at Ashburton to-day, is a well-grown four-year-old gelding by Royal Silk from Nyallo, tho latter a half-sister to the speedy Acron. At tho Wellington Meeting last month Nyallo Silk won the No vice Handicap, of a mile and five furlongs, in 3min 47 4-sscc from a 4min 3sec mark, his rate of speed being 2.20 to tho mile. To-day he is handicapped to do 4min Sosec for two miles. In his winning effort Nyallo Silk did only what was asked of him, and over the last quarter-milo came away like a good stayer. Tho extra distanco in to-day's race should not trouble him. For the Auckland Cup. Harold Logan, trained at 'l'empleton by R. Humphreys, is doing everything asked of him, and thero has been no recurrence of tho unsoundness that troubled him somo time ago. Hia record during the past 12 months is one that has seldom been beaten, and many keen judges are expecting him to go very close to winning tho Auckland Cup. At the recent meeting at Addington ho won over two miles very easily in 4min 22 4-ssec, after going round a big field. This was the most impressive win of his careor, and ono Of tho easiest. As his last win was recorded from a 4min 27sec mark, he cannot bff on a worse mark than 4min 25sec in the Auckland Cup, which means him giving away 36yds. Pageant Changes Hands. Mr E. Hinds, owner of Harold Logan, has purchased Pageant, who, a useful pei-former, acts as a trial horse for tho crack pacer. Pageant will be taken to Auckland, and ho may do a whole lot better tho right way of going than ho has done on left-handed courses during the past few months. Canterbury Park Programme. While the Auckland Trotting <Jlub will provido the star attractions during the Christmas and New Year holidays, there will bo a big countor-attraction in the Canterbury Park Meeting, to bo held on January Ist and 2nd. The club has provided two good races for tho top-notchers—the Canterbury Handicap of 1000 sovs, 4min 29sec class, and the Park Handicap, of 800 sovs, 4min 31s0c class—and the big expenso in travelling theso days will persuade many owners to patronise the local fixture instead of travelling further afield. Nominations close on December 17th, at 12 noon. Bracketed. Sea Mist and Arethusa, from D. Warren's stable, and Checkers and Rollo, trained by R. B. Berry, will be bracketed in the Selma Trot Handicap at Ashburton to-day. Improving. 1 Madam Loeanda, engaged at Ashburton to-day, is a six-year-old maro by Brent Locanda from Wild Madam, and she showed fair form at Forbury Park last week in running third to Great Chenault and Herod in the Advance Handicap on the second day of tho meeting. In doing so she registered 3min 20 4-saee, and was clOße up at the finish. Both three-year-olds that finished in front of her are above the average. Mountain Dell. Mr H. Mitchell, owner of Mountain Dell, has solved the problem of securing a place in the Auckland Cup field for his mare by nominating her for New Brighton, says the Auckland "Herald." Entered in the Mace Memorial Handicap, 4mln 40sec limit, Mountain Dell is on 4min 28sec, and having been handicapped on this mark she is now eligible for the Auckland Cup through the insertion of the clause in tho conditions or been handicapped to do" 4min 28sec. Mountain Dell's position is simit : rt ° , at of Eeremai last year, when d. bimkin entered his maro at AshbUrton to qualify by handicap for the Adams Memorial Cup, which she duly won. Mountain Dell may prove equal to the big contract set her, and with racing in her favour she should strip m rare condition for the great W? n Wrackler in the New Zealand Cup field, Mountain Dell, 4min sec, will have the slowest winning her 0f the Auc kJand Cup * -° n a g °° d tra<sk She capable of going a lot faster. Noted Brood-mare Dead. Lady Jinks, dam of Author Jinks, dropped dead at her owner's farm at Otaio last week, after producing a toal to Peter Moko, says the "New Zealand Referee." Fortunately the foal, a colt, survived. Mr D. O'Keefe has a yearling filly, algo by Peter Moko from

Lady Jinks, but those aro tlio only sur- j vivors of hor progeny since John Jinks, now a four-year-old. Lady Jinks bred by Mr G. King, of Washdyko, being by Black Ribbon from Fanny M. (by Bundoora). Sho was no good as a racer, being too excitablo to bo worth persevering with, but sho had the distinction Of producing Author Jinks, the best pacer of his inches Now Zealand has seen; John Jinks, holder of tho three-year-old record of 3min 20soe; and a useful maro in Lady Cello. Lady Jinks was about 20 years old at the time of hor death, but even so, her loss is n severe one. Reduction of Stakes. Tha Forbury Park Trotting (Jlub has decided to give £4275 in stakes at the Summer Meeting, £.500 less than at the same Meeting last year. —Press Association. A Boy do Oro Filly. Mrs K.
