BEACH PATROL.

ARRANGEMENT TO BE CONTINUED. LIFE-SAVING ASSOCIATION'S DECISION. The Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Association will be continuing the patrolling of beaches during the coming bathing season, and patrols will be commenced before Christmas. At a meeting of the Association last evening the chairman, Mr W. H. Benson, said that at the end of last season the Association had to notify the public that the beach controls would have to be discontinued on account of lack of funds. "Since that notice went out," he said, "a lot of good has been done. Sumner and New Brighton Lave both agreed to collect a sum of money towards the fund, and New Brighton have several promises of further donations." The money collected would, of course, be divided between the three beach patrols at Sumner, New Brighton, and North Beach, Mr Benson said.

Control of Scheme. Methods of control of the scheme gave rise to considerable discussion. "It is more the duty of the association to put the men on than it is the duty of the individual clubs," said Mr C. It. liiordan, who stated that ho considered that tho civic authorities should really b© the controlling authorities. Mr Benson: The Association must be the controlling body, and must approve of the patrolmen before they take up their duties. Agreement to the system of beach control under tTie principles mentioned by the chairman was reached. A letter from tho Christchurch City Council to the effect that the sum of £SO had been placed on the estimates to provide a grant of £25 towards the appointment of a controlman at New Brighton, and £25 towards the appointment of a patrolman at Sumner was received with thanks, Mr Benson mentioning that Tie would approach the Town Clerk in connexion with the distribution of £he money between those districts and also the North Beach district, where there would also be a patrolman •
