AEOLIAN CLUB.
EVENING OF FINE MUSIC. There is no need to repeat, what often lias been said in these columns in favour of music clubs as permanent institutions. The Aeolian Club, giving its second annual concert last night at the Radiant Hall, proved itself once more vigoroufilv alivo, and presented, with the help of professional friends, a programme even more than usually attractive. The club enjoys the privilege of preparing the refilled arts under eminently competent supervision that reduces the danger of purely manual readings—so often heard. For technical proficiency is, after all, only one of the requisites to an artistic performance.
Mendelssohn's G minor Concerto once upon a time almost invariably the test pioe.i for buddiup pianists, was chosco liy Miss Eileen ilughsoii, Mr JOmpson well supporting at the second piano. Miss Huglisou getting rather flustered in the first movement, made a fair and praiseworthy recovery from the Andante onwards. An early Beethoven Sonata for 'cello and piano was tastefully played by Miss Bessie Pollard and Mr IT. Dickson, the final gay movement rising to brilliancy. After that a deluge of Chopin. Miss Olive Cooper played two Chopin Eludes with Ijraius and excellent effect. The main theme of the C sharp minor might have been made more dreamy. Miss Is!a Barter's f! minor '•Nocturne'' is to be commended. Power and full mastery in the C minor Polonaise were again the features displayed by Miss Lucy I'ullwood.
The second part opened "with the Sidiubort Quintet named after his Bong "The Trout," which is introduced with the second Andante and variations, a beautiful composition admirably performed by Miss Irene Morris, and Messrs Harold Beck, Mercer, Barsby, and Ernest Empson. With his customary refinement and finish, Mr Frederick Page played "Jeux d'Enux" in Ravel's elusive strains. Miss Bessie Pollard finished the programme with a spirited performance of Liszt's "Hungarian Fantasia.'* Miss -Lilian Hanham'B services as vocalist aro always highly appreciated, hei* charming voice .and skill appearing this time in the "Roberto Aria" and in songs by Grieg, Jiahn, and Schumann, finely accompanied by Mr Empson.
