He has had a two months' holiday in New Jiouth Wales, of which State he was Governor from 1899 to 1901, and is leaving" by tho liner to-morrow morning en route to Vancouver. "1 intend visiting San Francisco, Washington, and -New York joining the Aquitania there on January 17th for Southampton. Lord Beauchamp said he had spent two very happy months in Australia. He had been received more than cordially by the officials of New South Wales, and by friends old and new. He had been greatly impressed with the progress and improvements that had taken place in Sydney since he was there 30 years ago. He was particularly pleased to find that in. spite of the enormous increase in the city's population, building had proceeded without in any way impairing the beauty of Sydnev Harbour It was unfortunate, he added, that his visi should have been made during a time of depression, but he hoped under-consumption by other nations was the cause of bad times rather than over-production, and that as peritv came to them. Australia tvoulq also benefit. Lord Beauchamp declined to comment on political matters in Austra*lii\ or New Zealand. He said be deprecated such expressions just as he deprecated similar expressions in England by visitors from tho Dominions. They never did any good, and generally vitiated by ignorance of the real situation. He expressed the opinion, however, that Great Britain was still far from the taxation of food, and said that any attempt to impose such a policy would make the Empire unpopular .with the British electorate. For that reason ns well as for others he was opposed to Lord Beaverhrook's Emmre Free Trade movement.
