BULL SALE.

ANNUAL FAIR AT TATTERSALL'S. PRICES WELL MAINTAINED. The annual bull sale at Tattersall's Horse Bazaar, conducted by H. Matson and Co., was held on Saturday, and it attracted a tremendous amount of interest, there being » capacity ring, which, contained representatives of practically all tho provinces in the South Island, The tale must be adjudged a most successful one, in spite of the general depression, and the fact that many of the animals did not show up too "well, owing to the backward season this year. Prices were even better than might have been ex* pected by vendor?. There wore 25 beef Shorthorns offered, 41 milking Shorthorns, 11 Ifriesians, 18 Jerseys, and two Ayrshires. One of the features of th© sale was the work of the auctioneers, a catalogue of ju»t on 100 entries being sold in icsa than four hours. The sale started at 9.30 a.m., and by 10 o'clock the accommodation was taxed to its uttermost- Buyers were in evidence from as l'ar bouth U6 Otago aud Southland, and a fair percentage from the West Ooaot, tianks Peninsula, .North Canterbury, and backcountry station-owners made their x)resence felt iu the contention of the day. Prices Well Maintained. Contrary to the expectation of the general public, the market hardened as the sale proceeded, ana competition was keen throughout, aud practically the whole of tho catalogue was dispo&ed of. For a large i>ortion ui tho caialogue last year's prices were well maintained. On the. best grades of cattle the vaiuea were ruling from jast year's rates to about a drop of JO per cent. The balance of the catalogue realised last year'® prices., and in many cases exceeded them. A noticeable factor of the sale was the even way that competition was distributed. Buyers for Jerseys, Friesians, Ayrshires, and all milking strains were operating. In former years tbo buying pubJic have been set on buying one particular grade of cattie, either Friesians or Shorthorns, and it has been hard to sell any of the lots that were not included in the fashionable breed of that season, but at Saturday's market the buying strength was general in all sections. Tattersaii's sale is really a wouderftil asset, as it allows buyers and sellers to meet on even ground. The method of drawing, and tho method of handling in the most eilicienv way have been resultant of nearly thirty years' experience; efficient staff, and exhibits well displayed, anr 1 the central position of the depot enable the buying public to attend the sale with very little inconvenience to themselves, and the advent of motor transport has enabled such a high stale of efficiency that the delivery of the goods to the centre and the removing of same on behalf of the vendor have been great factors. 11. Matson and Co. place the goods conveniently before tho buyer, instead of dragging the buyer to the goods. Selling for the number of years that R. Matson and Co. have done, where father and son have superseded one another, our knowledge and personal acquaintance with the dairymen, the fatteners and the graziers, enables us to be acquainted with the peculiarities of tho buying public. 4 The vendors represented have been continual sellers through us for a number of years, and our knowledge of their herds and the confidence that wo have attained with these vendors place us iu a position that we practically conduct our sales almost exempt of reserves. In no place in the world is such bona fide business transacted as that which takes place at our bull sale, held annually in Tattier* sail's. We have the confidence of the buying public, and we Jiave the confidence of the vendors. We look forward to holding the confidence of both vendors and buyers for our annual realisation next season, as undoubtedly the experience w» have gained is a tremendous factor to all those concerned both as breeders and purchasers, and the order of sale and the method on which it is conducted that every exhibit is on an equal footing has now become recognised as being tho fairest method beyond all doubt. Vendors depend upon us, and don't load their consignments vitb prohibitive reserves; in fact; reserves are rarely placed upon any lots. Th© buyers know this. The result is genuine and solid business. The principal sales were
