NEW SHUNTING ENGINE.

DISTINCTIVE DESIGN. The first of 12 new shunting engines o* a distinctive typo under construction at tho Hillside Workshops, Dunedin, has been completed, and put into service in the Cbristehuro.il yaids. The outstanding feature of the design, xrfcicli makes the locomotive unique in New Zealand, is a sloping tender enabling the engine-crew to aeo clearly both ahead and to tho rear. The locomotive itself is o£ typa 262, superheated, and ■weighs 66 tons scwt. It was--built entirely at the Hillside Workshops. Xew features are a special type of regulator •which permits quick stopping electric lighting, and 9. power reversing mechanism by which the engine may be reversed by air pressure, instead of by hand. 'The locomotive has already beeu iu service at Christchurch for about a vveeli, and its design has proved very 'satisfactory for tho work. As they are completed, the remaining 11 engines will be allocated through New Zealand, probably at Christchurch, Dunedin, Rci Invercargill.
