YOUNG SPORTS' CLUB. JUNIOR CYC&E RACES. The growing popularity of cycle racing as a sport among the youth of Christohurch was demonstrated on Saturday afternoon by the lnrpe number of boys who attended to take part in the two races held under the auspice* of the newly-formed Papanui Young Sporte' Club. Ir the first race, for boys between the ages of 12 and 17 years, there were thirtyseven starters, but as many more would have taken part had they been able to secure racing machines. Prior to the start of -h race a strong northerly wind was blowing, bringing clouds of dust down the Harewood road, but fortunately it died down just a« the race commenced. The start was made from Harewood road, near the end o£ JVLat. son's road, and the area known as the small block" had to be traversed three times, finishing on tho bitumen stretch along tne Harewood road, a distance of •r.ine miles. r».. On the scratch mark were LI. Rhodes* H Smithers, and A. H. Skidmore. who were conceding Smin to the limit riders. ■ were several spills, and at the conclusion of the race a few of the riders bore traces of having been under the care of the ambulance officer (Mr W. Bailley). At the en of the first lap the 3imin nders had overtaken the limit, with the rimin boys about 200 yards behind The next lap covered, there were peven in the leading bunch, wi their nearest opponents about 200 yards e hind. At this stage tfhe field began to attagßle out. D. Swsniton (Smin) went to the front, and on entering into Harewood rood had a lead of nearly a hundred yards. With a straight run home, and assisted by a following wind, he gradually increased his lead and crossed the line about 200 yards ahead of C. Collins, who was about 60 yards in front of H. Hohson. The times and placings were as follows: D. S. Swanston (3min), 26min 29sec .. 1 C. Collins (3*min), 27min 17sec .. 2 H. Hobson (3Jmin), 27min GQsec •. 8 P Kellv (2Jmin), 26min 29 S-s«ee .. 4 W, Common (3Jmin), 27min 56seo .. 6 A. Sheard (3min), 28min Ssec •• 6 Fastest time was recistered by S-wanston and second fastest by Kelly. A Second Event. Mtioh interest was taken in the second rac«, which was for boys und«r 12 years of ago, on Juvenile bicycles. The boys had evidently been preparing for the race. Their "bikes," stripped of mudguards and all other geaj that in the opinion of the boys would make for slow pace, and fitted with drooping handlebars, resembled as nearly as possible the modern ißcing machine. The race was over a straight course about a mile long, and the placings were as follows: Laurie Secord 1, Raymond Sturrock 2, Melville Sturrock 8. Leonard Lynn 4, Marvyn Selwood 5, Lindsay Moflatt G.
