The report from Washington by cable that the Byrd Antarctic expedition is still', heavily in is not surprising (states the : Dunedin "Star''). The Admiral's statement of the - indebtedness of the expedition is frank, but not pessimistic, as the explorer has had so many worries ' for the past five years that he will not allow himself to be disturbed now by the adverse balance-sheet. Like most expeditions, his suffered at various times from the problem of shortage of ready money, and when the Eleanor Boiling was en route for Panama on her journey home siif was held up for over a week at Tahiti through the want of money with which to purchase coal supplies The financial embarrassment was purely temporary, and' a cable to the United States by a Dunedm friend of • the expedition quickly brought an advance of money. Admiral Byrd always declared in conversation with a reporter that his expedition would come out'on the right side of the ledger, which no previous expedition had ever achieved. The Admiral anticipated that the motion pictures of the expedition, the salo of photographs, arid"'" the proceeds of the book which he is now preparing for publication would be profitable. After all, the present deficit is only a little over £20,000, a sum which should be wiped off without difficulty.
