Tho site for the new school at Blackball has been cleared, and carpenters have commenced the work of erecting the building. It is not expected to have the school finished until about next Mareh. Lewis Pass. A meeting was held last evening at Boefton, to protest against the stoppage of work on the Lewis Pass road. Mr I. Patterson presided and said that only last week a number of men had been sent up to work, and word had been received from the Public Works Office in Greymouth* to pay off the men and stop work. It was resolved that this meeting of representative eitizens of Reefton and surrounding districts, expresses its strongost feelings against the cessation of work on Lewis Pass road, and emphatically urges that tho work be prosecuted during the summer months, with the greatest possible number of men, especially in viow of the very restricted employment available in the coal mines at Boefton. The work is regarded as being of vital importance to the South Island.

Competitions Society. The annual meeting of the Westland Competitions Society was held at Hokitika laat evening, when Mr D.. J, Evans presided. The report and balance-sheet were read and approved. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of £l5O 5s 3d. It was decided to hold tlie Competitions in 1931, in the first terra holidays, as was done last year. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr D. J. Evans; Vice-presi-dents, Rev. G. Knowles Smith, Rev. J. W. H. Kuights, Father Finnerty, Messrs T. E. Y. Seddon, and H. M. Coulson; patrons, the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry)/ and the member for the district (Mr Jas. O'Brien); secretary, Mr H, Osmers; treasurer, Mr Jos. Work was commenced by the Greymouth Borough Council's staff, yesterday, with the laying down of the new four-inch cast iron water main in. Nelson street and Milton road to connect with the existing water supply reticulation. Obituary. The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday, of Mr James Wallttce Bate, of the New Zealand Railways. He was for many years ganger at Totara Flat and Ahaura. He was 85 years of age, and leaves a family of eight, the sons ' being John (Frankton Junction), Michael (Wanganui), Patrick (Napier), and Robert (Wanganui). The daughters are Mrs J. Shaw (Hokitika), Mrs -W. Flynn (Christchurch), Mrs L. Ward, and Mrs J. Roberts (Wellington). Boxing Club Formed. At a meeting held in Eunanga, it was unanimously decided to form a club to be known as the Eunanga Boxing Club. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr W. Eobson; secretary, Mr J. Duggan; treasurer, Mr A. J. Boddy; trustees, the chairman and.secretary; Management Committee, Messrs J. Garvey, R, J. Armstrong, W. Duggan, the president and secretary. Omoto Road. The removal of the debris caused by the recent slip on Omoto road, where widening operations were recently carried out by the Greymouth Borough Council, has been suspended until the weather conditions become more favourable. The work done so far has removed any immediate danger to traffic. Progress League. The Westland branch of the Canterbury Progress League met last evening. Present! Messrs T. J. Duff' (in the chair), W. Wilson, W. J. Butler, N. S. Dew, D. Evans, J. J. Mcintosh, W. E. Richards, and J. H. Coles. The Town Clerk, Kumara, wrote in regard to providing An aerodrome. It was resolved to ask for further information. The Reefton Progress League wrote in respect to the encouragement of the production of gold. It was resolved to reply that action had been taken in the matter earlier, through the Reefton County Council, Mr Butler reported briefly regarding the conference of Chambers of Commerce at the Hermitage last month. Mr Dew gave particulars of the proposed train timetable to take effect next week, the chief alteration being that the express will arrive at 6.4 p.m.~16 minutes earlier than at present» It was resolved "to • thank the Railway Department for th«* concession, and to ask that a through Monday passenger train be established both ways for summer, traffic.
