A STORMY PASSAGE.

Battered by high beam seas, driven before a gale of almost hurricane force, the steamer Barrdale, which arrived at New Plymouth this afternoon, had an extremely rough passage from Auckland. With 3000 tons of phosphate the ship left Auckland on Tuesday, and on rounding North Cape ran into rough weather. Throughout yesterday the Barrdale averaged three knots' and steamed 20 miles from the shore. The nature of her loading caused her to roll volently. Furniture and fittings were tossed about in the state-room, where Captain Naylor's wife had a terrifying experience. A steward carrying afternoon tea on a tray crashed downstairs and smashed everything he carried, and was lucky not to be injured. On one occasion the officers' dinner was swept from the tables. The Barrdale has had an unlucky voyage. While waiting to load phosphate at Ocean Island for Auckland and New Plymouth she drifted for 78 days -in rough weather. Provisions were exhausted when relief was secured from another ship.
