et the next meeting of delegates to the New Zealand Trotting Conference a new system of handicapping will be introduced, and the idea is to give handicappers no discretion whatever in the placing of horses. A Challenge. ® evera l good tl'ottcrs were seen out at the Meeting at Addington this week, put it is doubtful as to whether there is one that even approaches the class of Peterwah, 4min 23 4-ssec, holder of the world's race record for unhoppled trotters. Mr It. C. Fisken, owner of Peterw * is firmly convinced that nothing of Peterwah's class is racing i:i New Zealand at present, and he issues a challenge to race any trotter in Australia or New.Zealand over any distance for amount of money. The only stipulation is that ho must be given three months to get Peterwah into racing form. With so few races for the best class of unhoppled trotters Mr Fisken 7 s challenge should soon be taken up. i Incompetent Horsemen. There were many complnirits at Addiugton during the week concerning rough driving, and it is evident that sooner or later there will have to be a grading of drivers or the issue of licenses restricted. Stakes are big and speculation so spirited at trotting meetings nowadays that the public is entitled to Sofine protection from the trotting authorities. While a number of drivers view each race from tke_ grandstand, incompetent and inexperienced drivers are allowed to take a place amongst the professionals in rß i? es ' ■ There are many good drivers who will never make trainers, and still a greater number of trainers who should not be allowed to drive horses in races, seldom has there been so much bad driving at Addington as was witnessed during the week, and there seems no reason why such a state of affairs should exist. There are any number Of good drivers available for each race, but for some reason or other owners begrudge paying the fee that will ensure competent feinsmanship and a possiblo win as against an almost certain loss. It is a matter that must receive the attention of the New Zealand Trotting Association sooner or later. Cautioned. A ?H° e . to .» yesterday a meeting of the Judicial Committee was held to enquire into interference that took place in the Australasian Handicap, in which Arethusa, a warm favourite, had her chances extinguished. The verdict handed to the Press was as follows: It was decided that the interference ca £ Se H £ the carel ess driving of either E. A. Berry, driver of Apex, or 1. H. McGirr, driver of Curfew Bov but owing to the conflicting nature of the evidence the committee was unable to decide which of the two was actually responsible, and directed the stipendiary steward to give each of them a severe caution."
