(Received November 14th, 6.30 p.m.) • r LONDON, November 13. •The Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman for his work on light diffusion. [Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, M.A.,: Hon. D.Sc., P.R.S., who was knighted in 1929, is Professor of Physics at the Calcutta University and honorary professor at Benares Hindu University. He was born in 1888, and vi as educated at' the Presidency College, •M-adras. He joined the Indian Finance Department in 1907 and was Curzon Refu a ;: c ■ Prizeman' in 1912. In 1915 and •-4 he was sectional president of the Indian Science Congress and was general president iii 1928. 'He was appointed secretary to the Indian Association for oeience in 1919, has been a research associate of the California Institute of technology since 1924, and in 1925 was lecturer to the Mendeleff Congress. His publications include works on the theory of. diffraction and oscillation, and many scientific papers in the "Philosophical Magazine,'' the '' Physical Review,'' Nature," the "Astrophysical Journal, and the "Proceedings of the Koyal Society." He is at present editor of the Indian "Journal of Physics."]
