'' News that forty of the men employe 4 on the Te Anan /relief works are to fee discharged- on November 18th - and replaced by another forty came as a surprise to' thoße dealing with the unemployment question here. Recently advice was received from the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle that forty men would be placed on the Te Anau works, and this was interpreted as meaning that an Additional forty men would thus be employed. On receipt of the Department's decision to engage a fresh batch' of forty men, the Mayor telegraphed to the Minister for Public Works stating that he understood the men at Te An&u we#k incensed the-proposal, adding that the 'situation here demanded that additional provision be made urgently for unemployment works. Messages were also sent to Mr de la Perrelle and Mr H. E. Holland, M.P. LEWIS PASS ROAD. CESSATION OF WORK. y Six notice of the cessation erf : work was given to'the contractors en- | gaged on - tile Lewis. Pass road, and i one day to the relief workers employed as labourers. . All tools in use on the road have been stored at one of the nearby sto- * tions, and tents, have been taken down. Contractors who bad just received a fresh supply of chaff complain of the brief notice given. / A fortnight ago eighteen additional men were given work on the construction, and fresh surveys had been made for the sit© of a. bridge over one of the creeks, leading to the belief that work, would continue throughout the summer.
The Canterbury Progress League has telegraphed to the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. W. B. Taverner), enquiring the reason for closing tihe undertaking. It has received advice from the Inangahua County Council that a public njeeting of protest has been held at Reef ton, and it is stated _ that similar action may be taken in Christchurch.
