j GENERAL DECLINE. i ■ " j TRAM AND RAIL. Neither on trams nor on trains "was the holiday traffic yesterday as heavy as on Show Day last year. Although the weather was iine, the morning was boisterously windy, and the afternoon dull and threatening. This probably was one reason for the decline, and an-other-"was the increasing use of motor transport. Many thousands of people went "by ear to the Addington Show Grounds, and many., hundred others to picnic spots in different parts of the "province. Although noi comparative figures were available last evening, officials of the Christchurch Tramways said that the traffic generally had not equalled last year's in volume. Cars which were use<T~on Show Day last-year were yesterday lying idle in the sheds. The Show Grounds traffic was decreased, and so was that on the Sumner • line. About the usual number of people went to Cashmere Hills. The organisation was good, and the race and Show trams were expeditiously moved, from the Square. Traffic by Rail. There was a marked drop in the railway traffic to the Show Grounds. Five extra trains were run from Christj church to Lyttelton, and six from Lyttelton to Christchurch, the total number I of passengers being almost the same I as that on Show Day last year. Altogether about 120 people left Christchurch on the 1 excursion to Otira—-30 fewer than last year. The inward country trains were patronised to tho same extent as in previous years. Over 250 people arrived from the stations between Winslow.and Timaru. There were 25 car loads from the north line, 16 car loads from Ashburton, Chertsey, and Dromore, and 11 car loads' from Methven, Rakaia, and Dunsandel. Three Sunday school excursions were organised—Assemblies of God in New Zealand to Kaiapoi,. the Durham street Methodist Church to Leeston, and the Cambridge -terrace Methodist Church to Southbridge. ■ ' TRAMWAY RECEIPTS. ADVERSE BALANCE INCREASES. For tlie first six days ot' Carnival Week, ending on Thursday, the tramway receipts, as oompared with the corresponding period last year, showed a total decrease of £647. The Thursday .of Carnival Week last year was fine and sunny; this year it was dull and threatening. Takings showed a falling-off, the total last year being £1250 and this year £lOl9.
