RELIEF WORK CLOSING DOWN.

Advice was received in Christchurch yesterday that the men engaged on the construction of the Canterbury section of the Lewis Pass road bad received notice, and tho work would be closed down immediately. Over 100 labourers are affected, the number employed having been considerably larger until the commencement of the diversion of the Acheron river at Lake Coleridge, when some of them wore transferred therer Work has been proceeding on the road for nearly a year, and there was a vote totalling several thousands of pounds for further construction on this year's Public Works Estimates.
