NORTH CANTERBURY.

KANGIORA. Mr "\V. Everett, train examiner New Zealand Railways, Rangiora, has received advice of his transfer to Ashburton. Mr Everett has been in his present position for more than twenty years. _ . _ At a meeting of the Rangiora District School Committee, Mr C. W. Tyler presided. Also present; were Messrs R. Dalziel, A. Cambridge C. J. Smith, W. A. Rowse, and the Rev. J. H. Feron. Motions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of Mrs T. W. Ambrose, and Mr T. F. Ma>. The headmaster reported that th& school roll numbered 38G pupils, ana that the average attendance for tue team had been 365. The annual examinations were iu progress. The visiting -committee reported that a considerable amount of work had been put into the grounds during the month, and the grounds were now in good order. Great interest was being taken by the teaching staff and scholars in the school gardens, especially by Mr Southgate. senior assistant. The committee expressed appreciation of this. In a report bv the committee i/ii the dental clinic, the secretary (the Rev. J. F. Feron) stated that about £3O was still required, and steps would have to be taken immediately to raise the money. The headmaster said that the teaching staff were propared to arrange something, provided there was no other way of getting the sum required. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, secretary, and Mr Rowse. KAIKOURA. There was a good attendance at the Masonic Hall, when the Kaikoura Hockey Club held their final dance of the season. Music was supplied by Mr ,R. Clarke, and extras by Miss M. Palmar. Mr F. Taylor was M.C. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss K. Kerr and Mr J. Roberts. During tho evening, occasion was taken by the secretary (Mrs I. Cant) to make a presentation to the coach (Mr F. Taylor), who had done valuable work in coaching the girls, and nlso to Misses Tj. Poole and L). Pluck, two energetic workers for the club. There was a very good attendance at a meeting of the Cheviot Branch of the Farmers' Union, which was held in the Spotswod Hall, tho president (Mr W. Hughes) presiding. Votes of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr S. Haughey and the late Mr George Truman were passed in silence, members standing. A number of matters were dealt with in committee. Arrangements were completed for the cricket and croquet matches, and the offer of a lecture on "Wheat Growing in Canada," was accepted, the date to be arranged later. Hearty votes ot thanks were passed to the Cheviot Motor Co., Ltd., and Mr_G. Brown for assistance in connexion with the recent "drive" in aid of tho unemployed, which had proved most successful. At the conclusion of the business, supper Was served by the Spotswood members of the branch. At a meeting of the committee of the Cheviot Branch of tho Returned Soldiers' Association, over which the president (Mr T. West) presided, it was decided to hold tho annual meeting and reunion of tho branch on Saturday, November 22nd, and to invite tho president and members of the executive of the Christchurch R.S.A. to b© present, and also any returned soldiers who may be employed on the railway works at Parnassus. OXFORD. At a meeting of the general committee of the Oxford A. and P. Association sub-committees were appointed as follows: —Draught horses: Messrs H. G. Cross, E. J. Grimsey, J. Budge, Zi. H. Leslie; cobs and ponies, Messrs A. Meyers, R. F. Henderson, F. H. Gilchrist, C. F. Bassett, E. H. Thompson, K. D. Henderson; fat sheep: Messrs E. Skurr, W. J. Skurr, W. A. B. Reed, F. W. Cross; shed sections: The lady members of the Association. The Oxford Girls' Club gave an excellent variety entertainment as a windup to their season's activities. The Town Hall was crowded with an enthusiastic and appreciative audience. The entertainment consisted of one-act plays, dancing, choruses," and physical exercises. The function was excellently managed under the direction of Mrs Somerset, Miss Ruddock (secretary), and Mrs Sell (pianist). The members of the 'ilass made a presentation to Miss Ruddock, on her approaching marriage, J3ROOKSIDE. Mr and Mrs T. W. Brooks placed their residence and grounds at the disposal of the Leeston Methodist Circuit Ladies' Guild, for a garden party, arranged in the interests of the Methodist Children's Home at Papanui. The visitors included the Rev. A. N. Scotter, 8.A., president of the Methodist Conference, the Rev. F. T. Read, organiser for the Home, the Rev. _A. Hopper, and Mr Haines, superintendent of the Home. At the invitation of the Rev. G. P. Hunt, circuit-minister, the Rev. Scatter officially opened the garden party, commending tho cause for which it had been organised. Brief speeches were made by the Revs. Read and Hopper, and Mr Haines acknowledged the pratical interest shown bv the Leeston Methodists. Good sales were made at the stalls, where cakes, home produce, needlework, and other goods were displayed. •

SEFTON.

At a meeting of the Sefton Dopiain Board it was decided to accept the tender of the Radley Timber and Case Company for the felling of the trees, and for the timber. The annual collection of eggs, tbr the Methodist Orphanage, by the Sundav School and congregation ot tb© Sefton Methodist Church, took place recently. The ! parents of the children had been asked ' to vote 011 the place for the annual picnic. Waikuku Beach was chosen. STYX. ! At i'uo annual meeting of tile Presbyterian congregation of the Styx Church the Rev. G. Wood presided. Reports from the session management ! committee treasurer, P.W.M.U., ' Ladies' Guild, Sunday School, Bible Classes, Young Worshippers' League, and W.C.T.U. were considered and .approved. The reports showed that sixty pupils attended the Sunday Schools, at which thero were tea teachers. There were fifty-seven'families in the district, and 120 "pastoral visits had been made. The church roll was sixty, and the attendances at the four Communion services had been thirty-seven, forty-six, thirty-seven, and forty. There had been seven baptism? and one marriage in the church. Appreciation of the services of the Sunday evening preachers was expressed and better attendances n:quested. A vote of thanks was ae corded to Mr E. Freeman for attending to the church grounds. Appreciation and thanks were accorded to all I who had helped during the year to I enable the congregation to show signs jof progress. The following were elected to the committee:—Mesdames Marwick, Blain, Donaldson, Messrs Cudworth, Barnes, Donaldson, Duke, and Ford. WHARANUI. The Kaikoura Ladies' Hockey Club held a very successful dance at No. 8 camp. A largo party ©f supporters made th-; trip from Kaikoura. Gibson was M C and Mr Bob Clark (Kaikoura) supplied the music. The Wliaranui Cricket Club hel<J a dance, when a very pleasant evening was spoilt. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr W. Gordon and Miss R. Melhopt. The Wliaranui Orchestra supplied tiie music. The Kaikoura Tennis Club intend holding a dance at Wliaranui at. an early date. Good progress is beinji made with the bridging of the Ivekerangu stream. 'I ho first pier has been completed. Shearing operations are tiuw in lull swing hero. A cricket match was played between Vharanui and No. 2 camp, the latter winning by 178 runs to 95. J. At a meeting of the Akaroa Regatta Club the Commodore, Mr G. Armstrong, presided, A programme of rowing events was adopted. Mr P. G. Riches gave notice of motion that January 2nd, as the date of the regatta, bo rescindei!. The Borough Council wrote agreeing to allow tlio Club to erect stalls near the approach of tlio new wharf. At the last meeting for this y«ar of the Presbyterian Sewing Giuld, Mrs It. Bruce invited the members to a gardon party at her home. Thero was a large attendance, and after routine business had been disposed of a number of competitions were held, the winners being:—Putting: Mrs S. Naismith; scallywag, Mrs E. E. Eves; feathered tribe, Mrs C. Patterson. Afternoon tea was provided by the hostess. . During the morning service at St. Peter's Church last Sunday, the vicar (the Rev. C. L. Wilson) became unwell, and was unable to complete his duties. He haß since been confined to his bed, but is reported to be now making slow progress towards recovery. MOTUKARARA. Next Sunday Messrs C. Angas, G. Ollivier, J. W, Sheppard, and H. Dymond will be the guests of tlio Wailiora Tennis Club at luncheon. In the afternoon the visitors will play several exhibition sets of tennis. To-morrow the local teams will play Southbridge, tho senior team at home and the B team at Southbridge. A ladies' committee held a "bring-and-buy" in connexion with the Gebbie's Valley Church, when their efforts realised nearly £,20. The next Farmers' Union branch meeting will be a combined meeting with the ladies' branch, when an address will be given by Mr R. Nairn, of Nairn and Sons. PREBBLETON. The main roads through the Prebbleton township now boar an exceptionally tidy appearance. Members of "the County Council's staff have been engaged for some time cleaning the channels and watercourses and renewing the lines of pipes at intersections, wliilo the grader has been requisitioned to remove the unsightly growth of weeds from the l-oadsidoß. With an increased membership this year the tennis club has more than ever become a centre of activity. There is keen competition amongst members for places on the ladder, and a number of challenge matches have already been played. The two teams playing in com petition matches have so far met with fair success, and several of the newer members give promising displays of form. This year the tea mooting usually held in connexion with the patronal festival of All Saints' Church was allowed to lapse. Instead, a concert is to be given by tho Christcliurch Glee Singers towards the end of the present month. At a meeting of the committee of the Amateur Sports Club it was reported that the Labour Day sportß, though quite a successful fixture from a sports point of view, had resulted in a financial deficit, mainly owing to adverse weather conditions. A comprehensive programme of athletic and cycling events has been arranged for the next annual meeting. HORORATA.
