DRIVER AND PASSENGER INJURED.

A motor accident, as a result of which two of the occupants of the car concerned are now in tne Ashburton Public Hospital, one being on the critically ill list, occurred at Grecnstreet early yesterday morning. The car, a flve-seater Essex, driven by H. L. Tremain, taxi proprietor, residing at I°4 Alford Forest road, who had with _hi m Mr Noel Wilson and Mr Frederick Harrison as passengers, was proceeding towards Ashburton from Springburn, and when negotiating a slight bend in the road at Greenstreet struck an electric light pole. Mr Wilson received a fracture of the base of the skull and is in a critical condition, while Mr Tremain suffered a lacerated face. . Mr Harrison escaped with minor cuts. Such was the force of the impact that the middle portion of the front bumper bar of the car was pushed against the radiator, and the front of the car was badly damaged. Frost. ■ Six and a half degrees of frost were registered in. Ashburton yesterday morning. Swimming. The Ashburton East Swimming Club Committee met, when the president (Mr W. H. Robinson) presided. It was decided to open the season about the end of this month and to have mixed bathing on Saturday afternoons throughout the season. Mr C. Anderson was appointed secretary in place of Mr C. H. Day, who had retired. Miss F. Anderton was appointed assistant secretary. Cycling. A nine-mile road raw for novice riders, promoted by an old cycling enthusiast, was held round the Wakanui block last evening. The roads were in good order, but the prevalence of dust made conditions unpleasant at times for the riders. The north-west wind which prevailed slowed up the pace, but nevertheless the times were quite good. Thern were a good number of spectators. The race was won by A. Melrose, who also secured fastest time. Results :

Tennis. The Te iviarae Lawn Tennis' Club will be represented by the following players in the junior competition, which will open on Saturday:—W. Watkins, W. E. Buchanan, N. Cornish, Misses E. Thorns, P. McTigue, E. Vesty, I. Dalberg. Emergencies—C. Anderson, Misses X. Brunton, and B. Anderson. Borough School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Borough School Committee was held last evening, when the chairman (Mr J. Watson) presided. The Canterbury Education Board advised that it had approved a subsidy on voluntary contributions (£l6) raised for library books, and stated that the amount would be made available on receipt of the account indicating that an expenditure of £37 had been made on library books. Tl»c committee decided to place two rooms at the school at the disposal of the Education Board on November 26th for the medical examination of candidates for probationary teachers. A letter was received from the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club stating that it desired a definite agreement with the committee regarding the use of the school baths by the club, and pointing out that it ha.l been put to considerable expense each year.

The question of drawing up regulations was referred to the chairman (Mr Harle), the headmaster, and the secretary. A circular setting out the terms and holidays for 1931 was roceived from the Education Department. It was stated that after the Christmas vacation the schools would reopen on February 2nd, 1931.

The headmaster (Mr S. H. Sullivan) reported that the average attendance for the past four weeks had been 440.2, 459.6, 458.3, and 464 respectively, out of a roll of 488. Mr Sullivan recommended that the question of attendance certificates should be considered. The school band, under Mr Mcßean, was making good progress.

STAVELEY. A meeting to consider the increased charges recently imposed by the Ashburton Electric Power Board was held in the £>tavek>y Hall, when there was a good attendance. Mr G. Fittock presided, and introduced Mr H. G. Kemp, engineer-secretary to the Ash burton Povrer Board. Mr Kemp explained the position that had arisen. The trouble dated from the time the guarantees expired, and the loss had been greater than was expected. Up till six months ago there were indications that the trouble would rectify itself, but this bad season had been experienced. Consumers were restricting their use of current. A consumer pointed out that owing to the low lake level economies in current had been forced on the users. In answer to a. question, Mr Kemp said that a local rate could be struck, and anyone was entitled to use current up to the value of the rate. He also said that an individual rate oould be struck as long as the individual property could be defined. No motion of protest was passed. A vote of thanks to Mr Kemp for explaining matters was passed. RAKAIA. In the Rakaia Town Hall a very enjoyable social was held in aid of the funds of the Rakaia Cricket Club. There was a large attendance. Music ■was supplied by Messrs T. Lawler and Slatterv, and extras were played by Mr A. Pluck. Mr A. Pluck was M.C. METHVEN. A meeting of the committee of the Methven Bowling Club was presided over by Mr A. E. Henderson. There were also present—Messrs Jno. Watson, W. C. Lowery, H. E. Thomson, and W. J. Owen (hon. secretary;. Messrs PI. E. Thomson and W. J. Owen were appointed a selection committee. Further discussion took place in regard to the purchase of a motor mower, and Messrs Watson and Lowery were appointed a sub-committee to make further enquiries and to report at next meeting. The secretary reported that the entries for the singles championship totalled 12, while four rinks had entered for the rink championship. The draw for the singles championship is as follows: —Section A—W. J. Cooksley, G. Cookson, A. K. Henderson, G. Waddington, J. Buff, and E. F. Ward. Section B W. J. Going, H. E. Thomson, E. J. R.
