THE SHOW.

JUDGING DAY TO-DAY.

PROGRAMME OF BVENTS. The preliminary arrangements in connexion with the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Show, which opens to-day, were practically completed last evening, and the indications are that this year's exhibition will be one of the most successful in the Association's history. With a very large increase in the number of entries, and the inclusion of many new classes, it is anticipated that there will be an increased interest in the various sections. To those interested in the progress of the primary industries of Canterbury, Judging Day affords an opportunity to inspect the various exhibits in circumstances more favourable for their appreciation than exist when crowds throng all parts of the ground on People's Day. The Show provides a splendid opportunity, and really the only one in the year, for the reviewing in one exhibition the progress made in stock breeding and the inspection of the latest inventions in machinery and implements designed to assist in increasing production or in decreasing the cost of that production. To-day those interested will find a wealth of exhibits to engage their attention, and in regard to the farm machinery and implements it can be said that this year's display will be one of the most comprehensive and interesting that has ever been seen on the Show Grounds in Christchurch, or in fact at any other Metropolitan Show in the Dominion.

Splendid Entries. In regard to the entries of stock, it is a feature that the sheep sections show a very slight decrease in the number of entries. This small decline is noteworthy, since the season has not been a favourable one for the preparation of sheep for show purposes, which must have had a very definite effect on the entry. The following table gives a comparison between the number of entries in the various sections this year and last year: — 1929. 1930. Sheep .. 970 966 Cattle .. 282 270 Horses .. 535 656 Pigs ..77 68 Rabbits .. 32 65 Poultry . . Miscellaneous . . 681 881 Totals .. 2577 3105 Representative Display. The stock entered is representative of districts which are very widely separated, and the entries include stock from most of the best-known in the Canterbury province, and also from further afield in the South Island. There are exhibits from Otago, Southland, and also from the following districts in Canterbury: Waiau, Waipara, Cheviot, Eangiora, Oxford, Kaiapoi, Eyreton, Little River, Southbridge, Whitecliffs, districts served by the West Coast line, Rakaia, Methven, Ashburton, Timaru, and ITairlie.

Evening Programme. This year there are to be special programmes in the evening. To-night there are to be several novelty events, and one of the most interesting ,will be an event for veteran trotters—horses which have not raced for five years. There are quite a number entered for this event.

CANTERBURY KENNEL CLUB. TO-DAY'S EXHIBITION. Entries for the Canterbury Kennel Club's 25th annual ehow, which will bd held at the Show Grounds to-day and to-morrow, exceed those of last year, and some remarkably fine dogs will bo on view. Kerry Blues are making their first appearance on the benches, and an interesting exhibit will be a Great Dane, over 10 stone in weight. Old English sljecp dogs will be another novelty.

Great interest is being shown in the working gun dog trial, which will be staged bv the club to-morrow morning in Mesiflrs Matson and Company's lucerne paddocks, 297 Lincoln road. A record entry has been received, including dojEs from the North Island, and embracing Cocker Spaniels, Clumber Spaniels, Labradors, and English and Irish Setters.

Mr H. Ayers, a keen gun dog enthusiast, has presented a silver cup for competition, and it is expected that some excellent work will be Been. Arrangements have been made for a moving picture to be taken of the trial, which will be open to the public.
