MATCH WITH WELLINGTON

CONSTANTINE DESTRUCTIVE.

(PBEBS ASSOCIATION TZLEORAM.) WELLINGTON, November 12. The West Indies cricketers made a most auspicious first appearance in New Zealand to-day, when they commenced a two days' exhibition match, against a Wellington representative eleven. The honours of the day were all with the visitors. Wellington had to scratch for close upon four hours to put 195 together against very steady bowling and brilliant fielding. Constantine, Trinidad, lived up to his reputation as one of the world's outstanding players by taking six wickets for 24 runs off 14 overs, and fielding m a manner that has never before been surpassed on the Basin Reserve. Dempster could do little against the machine-like length of the' visitors attack. It took him 35 minutes to reach double figures, and after reaching 2 he was caught at the wickets oft Constantine. , . .. Hepburn, a colt who was making his first appearance for the province shaped as well as any of the local players, and McGirr also used his feet in getting out to meet the ball. The visitors showed brilliance when they went to the wickets. Roach hooked Parsloe's first ball of the innings to the fence at long leg, and repeated the stroke off the third ball. Hunter also did the same thing off the first ball of Parsloe's second over. A brilliant catch by Hawkins behind the wickets disposed of Roach, and off the last ball of the day Sealey was brilliantly caught at fine leg by Dempster, who tHrew himself to make the catch. When stumps were drawn the West Indies had lost two wickets for 23 runs. Blundell had secured the two wickets The match will be resumed to-morrow, and the visitors will leave for Auckland by to-morrow night s limited express train to join the steamer for Sydney on Friday.
