A meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. H. Williams (president). J. R, McKenzie, S. W. Kelly, G. McMillan, H. VV. jvitchingham, J. B. At the last nieetintr of the Board a letter was received from tne secretary of the fciociety for t£e Prevention of Cruelty to Animals concerning the condition of a horse Dazzle) that had raced at the Aew Brighton Meeting. The Society was of the opinion that to race a norse in such a condition involved cruelty. The Board decided to get the opinion of Mr H. E. Martin, veterinary sur-. eeon. Mr Martin said that paralysis of the vocal oord was a fairly common complaint amongst both gallopers and trotters, and he considered that if a horse did not get sufficient air to allow him to finish a race without being unduly distressed, it would certainly constitute cruelty. It was decided to thank Mr Martin for his letter. , _ The secretary of the Geraldme Racing Club, in reply to a letter from the Board, said the reason of its lignt harness events being run over odd distances (120 yards over a mile and a half), said that this was done m order to obviate the necessity of starting on a bend; and to give the horses a straight run until they got mto position. The „ club would consider the matter at its next meeting, and, if possible, would race over a mil© and a half. The letter was received. It was decided to pass the programme submitted by the Vincent Jockey Club on condition that tne limits of tho light-harness events were tightened up in accordance with tne Rules of Trotting. „ . The Canterbury Owners Breed ers' Association suggested that tne Board should do its best to have the obsolete method of starting with worsted done away with. _ It was .stated that the worsted floating m the air . before a horse was dangerous. . It was decided to reply to the Association stating that while the Board was in full sympathy with the request made, it suggested that th© Association should deal with the clubs concerned. It was stated that th© .cost of an up-to-date barrier was considerable, and few of the country clubs oould afford th© big , expense.
