auctions. H. MATSON AND CO. sheep as being of euch a high standard in the Argentine that our sheep uru becoming far more sought alter than toe British tmeey. 'i'nis man was actually a judge at tho big: shows at Palermo and other places in the Argentine, and he is also recognised as & capable judge in Great Britain, therefore we bay to our stud bredoera here—do not heed the interests that are endeavouring to break down our barriers and open our ports for the importation of sheep, merely to tind an outlet for those dealing breeders in the Old World whoso stock are not attractive enough to find au outlet, hence tho desire to exploit .New Zealand. LATEST INFORMATlON—Notwithstanding the assurances of our worthy British friends, the Live Stock Journal of September 26th advises a second outbreak of foot ant mouth disease occurred in Yorkshire la«t week on a farm. You will uotice this is the second outbreak. They are now endeavouring to make a change of policy to try and keep the disease in check, but the fact remains that notwithstanding f all assurances that we have from these different places at Home, they have left no stone unturned to paint the picture up to tho very best that they can possibly do. Two outbreaks have now taken place quite recently, the latest being this one in Yorkshire. They nro now resorting to burniftg the hay and fodder, and destroying everything that was likely to _ bo in contact with the animals or the locality, tho boiling and sterilising of meat and paper wrappers, the destruction of hay and straw, the prohibition of importation of trees, shrubs, plants, bulbs, etc. We note that importations have been made of horses which in our opinion is entirely wrong, and the barriers as regards regulations should be considerably tightened up eo that diseases cannot find their way either from Australia or Great Britain to the pastures of New Zealand, and not only tho footand mouth disease, but other diseases that apparently they are incapable of stumping out in England, such a3 scab, etc. Wo know the difficulties wo had locally with it in the early days. Great Britain at the present time is leaving no stone unturned to exploit our market. At the present time wo have ambassadors of one sort and another endeavouring to lull the fear and tho risk that we have in respect to these matters. Thank goodress the greater portion of our flock masters are steady men who can produce stocM that is able to find a market and compete with any other country, and are not prepared to accept any risk that will prejudice the as3ets of this country.
